SAFETY SPOTLIGHT
to change it up and make the information not
just informative but also engaging.
Scheduled, periodic reviews of safety data
naturally lead to an opportunity to update
employees on progress being made or areas of
concern. Holding a safety meeting quarterly
or annually is a natural way to pass along that
information. It sounds trite, but bringing lunch
for the group or coordinating the meeting
with a work anniversary or other celebratory
get-together may help increase engagement.
Encouraging friendly, respectful interactions
among employees will reduce barriers to
sharing safety-related events. Utilizing
recognitions or rewards for team members
who contribute to safety and celebrating safety
milestones and achievements are other ways
to reinforce the importance of participating in
ongoing safety efforts.
Following up on the safety meetings with
written communication through a newsletter,
bulletin, email, or other archivable publication
is an excellent way to ensure all team members
can access your safety information. It can also
help to guide target areas for training.
Recurrent training can and should be
customized and tweaked to highlight
procedures, standards, or operations related
to specific event categories identified as
areas for improvement in safety assurance.
There are also opportunities for safety
workshops or industry safety stand-downs
where safety trends and events are shared,
and experts in safety-related topics come
together to present industry best practices.
Investing time and resources in these
types of safety initiatives demonstrates
a commitment to safety and increases
opportunities to make improvements and
reduce the risk of having an accident.
Since everyone plays a role in safety, everyone
should be encouraged to share and participate
in promoting it. If anyone comes across
information that they feel could benefit the
team, they should be encouraged to share that
information. Safety promotion shouldn't be
left to one individual or take one size or shape.
For people to feel comfortable sharing, they
need to feel safe and supported, which echoes
the " just culture " statement in the SMS safety
policy pillar.
As Herbert Heinrich stated in his book
Industrial Accident Prevention: A
Scientific Approach, " When a situation
exists that creates loss of life, injury,
and suffering; when it costs a king's
ransom annually; when its cure has been
Effective communication between staff and management
is a key component of the Safety Promotion pillar.
demonstrated to be practical; and when all
are agreed that something can and should be
done about it, it is time to stop talking, roll up
the sleeves, and go to work. " By implementing
safety promotion, continually reviewing our
risk and mitigation strategies, and looping
back around through all four pillars of the
SMS, we are doing the work necessary to
improve safety. These efforts are vital to
creating a safety-centric framework and
promoting a safe work environment beneficial
to all participating.
