Placek Grants support scientific research to increase the public’s understanding of homosexuality and to alleviate the stress that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people experience. Two $15,000 grants are awarded by the American Psychological Foundation each year. Apply by March 1. Learn new research methods at Advanced Training Institutes
aPa is accepting applications for this summer’s advanced Training Institutes, which provide intensive training for psychology graduate students, postdocs and other researchers. Tuition is $350 for aPagS members, and participants can apply for financial assistance to defray lodging and travel costs. This year’s institutes are: • “Structural Equation Modeling in longitudinal research” at the university of California, Davis, May 29–June 2. learn to analyze longitudinal data using structural equation modeling, a statistical technique for testing causal relations. Course instructors will cover fundamental measurement problems, dealing with incomplete data and new techniques for dynamic analyses. Participants will gain practical experience using SEM computer scripts and are encouraged to bring their own data. Apply by March 20. • “Exploratory Data Mining in Behavioral research” at the university of California, Davis, June 4–8. Practice finding complex relationships between multiple variables in large datasets through this intensive seminar. Participants gain hands-on experience using current data mining techniques and software, including canonical regression models and pattern searches with recursive partitioning. Apply by March 20. • “research Methods with Diverse racial and Ethnic groups” at Michigan State university, June 11–15. Participants in this seminar learn to design culturally sensitive studies with diverse populations and should come to the course with an idea for a specific research project. Apply by March 27. • “Nonlinear Methods for Psychological Science” at the university of Cincinnati, June 18–22. Participants learn advanced statistical techniques such as quantitative recurrence analysis, fractal methods and power law analysis of data distributions. Apply by March 27.
