Foundation AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL Grantee spotlight: Bullying prevention For Bonnie Leadbeater, PhD, winning an APF grant was the beginning of her eventually being able to bring an antibullying program to thousands of children in Canada. In 2003, she won a $20,000 APF Violence Prevention and Leadbeater Intervention grant to help develop and pilot a bullying intervention program called WITSLEADS, which teaches older elementary school students how to spot and prevent bullying among younger students, in an elementary school in Esquimalt, B.C. The program reduced bullying at the school, and that success enabled Leadbeater to secure more than $2.8 million in additional funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada to expand the program to 150 elementary schools in Canada, and several middle schools. “We have continued to benefit from APF’s investment, particularly in terms of making resources available to middle school students,” Leadbeater says. That funding also allowed her to conduct a randomized controlled trial of the intervention. For more information on the program, visit the WITS website www.witsprogram.ca. Donor Spotlight: Rosie Phillips Bingham, PhD APA Council of Representatives member Rosie Phillips Bingham, PhD, of the University of Memphis, has donated $10,000 to APF for its National Multicultural Conference and Summit Fund, which supports the biennial conference dedicated to promoting multicultural psychology. “Some things should endure,” says Bingham. “Among those things are interventions and methods that significantly Bingham change the world for the benefit of humankind. Much of what is done in psychology fits that description. In fact, sometimes changes that are wrought by the efforts of psychologists become such a part of everyday life that it is easy to forget the work that made the changes possible, and therefore too much of the knowledge and advancement of such knowledge gets lost. By donating to APF, I can help to assure that psychological research, education and intervention will continue to grow and advance. Programs like the National Multicultural Conference and Summit will continue to help to train our best and brightest. I want to be a part of that future.” n Upcoming deadlines April April 1: Div. 17 Counseling Psychology Grants April 1: Ungerleider/Zimbardo Travel Scholarships April 15: Paul Henkin School Psychology Travel Award April 15: Alexander Gralnick Prize May May 1: Timothy Jeffrey Memorial Award May 1: Pre-College Psychology Grant May 1: AAPA/APF Okura Mental Health Leadership Fellowship May 15: Violet and Cyril Franks Scholarship June June 1: Benton-Meier Scholarships June 1: Robert Fantz Award June 1: Joseph B.
