Resident Experts: CPME’s Residency Evaluators Share Their Stories R esidencies play a critical role in the education and training of today’s podiatrist and in the case for parity with other physicians. As CPME embarks on the new Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency (PMSR; see CPME Update, page 52), the work of residency evaluators will be even more critical to the profession. In this article, APMA News turns the spotlight on the residency evaluation process and speaks with three seasoned residency evaluators to learn more about what they do and how their work advances podiatric medicine every day. dency Review Committee (RRC). The RRC reviews the report and makes a recommendation to CPME about approval status for the residency. The Evaluators Lori DeBlasi, DPM Board certified in foot surgery by ABPS; completed a threeyear residency in foot and ankle surgery at St. John North Shores Hospital in Harrison Township, MI. Residency evaluator since 2007. In private practice in Dublin, OH, and a core faculty member of the Grant Medical Center Podiatric Medicine and Surgery-36 residency in Columbus, OH. Participant in approximately 10 on-site evaluations. • • The Process Podiatric residencies are evaluated on site generally every six years. The residency evaluation process begins with submission of CPME 310, Pre-evaluation Report, by the residency program being reviewed. The evaluation team, made up of a team chair representing CPME, a representative from the American Board of Podiatric Surgery (ABPS), and a representative from the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine (ABPOPPM), carefully reviews the materials, including each resident’s surgical and medical logs. Before the scheduled site visit, the team meets to discuss any commendations or concerns they identified in that review. During the site visit, the team meets with the residency director to obtain information about the institution and training program, including any additional materials needed by the team or clarification of concerns identified in the pre-evaluation materials. The team then meets individually with pertinent hospital staff, medical staff, podiatric staff, and podiatric residents. The purpose of these interviews is to determine the level of resident participation and responsibility in clinical patient management, inpatient management, and in the operating room and recovery area. The interviews also allow the team to assess the adequacy of the education and training afforded the residents and the availability of appropriate resources. The team tours the facility and requests a sampling of charts and X-rays to review and evaluate for correct procedure selection and surgical outcome. At the end of the visit, the team meets again with the residency director and hospital staff to discuss initial findings of the on-site evaluation. Following the visit, the team prepares CPME 370, Evaluation Team Report for Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency, detailing its findings for each standard and requirement outlined in CPME 320, Standards and Requirements for Approval of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residencies. The final report (after review by the residency program) goes to CPME’s Resi30 APMA News July/August 2011 • • Paul Di Liddo, DPM Board certified by ABPS in foot surgery and reconstructive rearfoot and ankle surgery; completed a residency at St. John North Shores Hospital in Harrison Township, MI.
