Strategic Planning Retreat Underscores APMA Direction variety of APMA stakeholders gathered in Lansdowne, VA, May 20–22 for a strategic planning retreat designed to ensure that APMA’s strategic plan continues to steer the organization and the profession in the direction of our goals. Among the participants were six state component leaders, four young members, the Board of Trustees, and APMA’s senior staff. These activities were designed to identify key issues facing APMA, address knowledge gaps about these issues, and create a strategic plan to address the issues. The group also discussed action plans for achieving the identified goals. Key topics at the retreat included: • • • • • Marketing, awareness building, and advocacy; Recruiting and retaining young members; Decreasing fragmentation within the profession; Generating outcomes data to support parity; and Achieving parity. Much of the discussion focused on how to ensure residents and young members are aware of the many benefits of APMA membership and the value it provides. Participants also noted that APMA should conduct further research to determine young members’ perceptions of APMA, their needs and concerns, and how best to communicate with them. Conversation about fragmentation within the profession also addressed young members and the generation gap be34 APMA News July/August 2011 Vision 2015 as the plan to achieve parity. APMA already has made significant strides in advancing podiatric medical education by extending the length of residency programs to three years (see more in CPME Update, page 52). A major student recruitment initiative has been part of the Today’s Podiatrist campaign and is yielding strong interest in the profession. Moreover, APMA continues to forge outstanding and mutually supportive relationships with colleagues in other healthcare specialties. The strategic planning participants agreed it will be important in the near future to leverage these relationships to their fullest by requesting membership in other organizations’ physician categories and asking them to testify on behalf of podiatric medicine. Another great success in the quest for parity was the publication of the Thomson Reuters Healthcare study data demonstrating the significant impact care by a podiatrist has on health-care costs and outcomes for people with diabetes. The assembled group agreed more positive outcomes data is required to further support the case for parity. Jones is preparing a formal report of the outcomes of the strategic planning retreat. The board will consider that report at its July meeting in Boston, and staff will begin work on new initiatives based on the board’s input. Watch for more information in APMA News in September. n
