APMAPAC Update APMAPAC Champion: Kaplan-Clarke Tournament The annual Kaplan-Clarke Invitational Golf Tournament and Fundraiser (the KC) is celebrating its 22nd anniversary in grand style! If you’re seeking an exciting, premier golf experience and a weekend of fun and camaraderie, this event is for you. An added bonus: The fun and camaraderie benefit your profession. This year, the KC will be held at the fabulous Horseshoe Bay Resort October 19–23. It is the premier lake and golf resort in Texas, located just 45 minutes outside Austin along the panoramic Lake LBJ. Golfers can hit the links on three championship courses designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., as well as a unique, made-to-scale, 18-hole par 72 Bermuda grass putting course. “This event is for all types of golfers, and it is mainly social. I have made lifelong friendships here that I value. It’s made wonderful memories for everyone,” said William Dabdoub, DPM, KC co-chair and secretary-treasurer of APMAPAC. Left to right: Theodore H. More than 1,200 podiatrists, friends, and family members have raised an amazing $500,000 for podiatric political action over the years. The KC is a three-day event with play occurring on a new course daily. It also provides practice enhancement seminars and a full-service spa. The tournament’s continuing success results from the work of the planning committee and APMA staff, who ensure that all the elements come together for the players. The KC is intended to remind us of the importance of the legislative and political advocacy that helped the profession develop into what it is today. Its founders are Oliver Foster, DPM; Richard Hecker, DPM; Eugene Spector, DPM; and Gary Kaplan, DPM. The planning committee is now led by Drs. Dabdoub and Gary Kaplan, who personify the legacy of KC’s namesakes, Earl G. Kaplan, DPM, and Theodore H. Clarke, DPM, both former APMAPAC chairs and APMA past presidents. Gerald Peterson, DPM, APMAPAC chair and loyal KC participant, said, “This is but one way to give back to the profession and keep it strong. It is one of those rare opportunities to have fun while still supporting political action, which has always been so critical to the success of our profession and its forward movement in health care.” The tournament got its start in 1989 at the famed Pinehurst golf resort, and it continues to be held at nationally acclaimed golf venues. More than 1,200 podiatrists, friends, and family members have raised an amazing $500,000 for podiatric political action over the years. 66 APMA News July/August 2011 While a group of diehard supporters rarely misses this event, participants old and new come from all around the country. The APMA and APMAPAC boards, too, are always well represented. “It’s a fun-filled weekend that concludes with a great awards banquet at the end,” said Dr. Foster, former KC chair and long-time APMAPAC chair. Dr. Foster hopes many more APMA members will become part of the KC tradition. In the early years, Drs. Earl Kaplan and Clarke were regular participants, along with their wives. Dr. Clarke often toured the course cheering players on, or he stationed himself on the green for the closest-to-the-pin or hole-in-one competitions (just to keep everyone honest). Dr. Kaplan frequently joined a foursome of friends on the course, vying with gusto in the competition. “This event is a testament to the memories of our revered PAC and professional leaders. It’s a way for us to remember where we came from, to recognize the trials we have overcome, and to follow Earl and Tedi’s commitment to employing the legislative and political process to move this profession forward,” said co-chair Dr. Gary Kaplan. Many loyal companies have joined in that commitment as sponsors. This year’s sponsors include Dr. Comfort, Bako Pathology Services, Advanced Biohealing, Burns International, and Universal Footcare (Henry Schein). Their support is vital to the continuing success of the podiatric profession as well. Dr. Comfort has been a KC corporate-level sponsor for the last four years. Eric Lorenz, CEO of Dr. Comfort, is personally involved with the KC as a tournament participant. According to Lorenz, “it’s a terrific venue to get together and conduct business.
