Young Voices By Erin Klein, DPM Residency Transition—Navigating the Paperwork Jungle The transition from residency to fellowship extends far beyond the scope of the clinic and the operating room. Licensing and credentialing involve many applications. What follows is a short list of applications most podiatrists will have to complete before beginning their first jobs. This list provides a sample timeline for completing applications, but contact your state society for exact information. requires that residents be certified in advanced cardiac life support for the duration of training. A license to practice podiatry in the state of your choice Contact: Varies by state; however, the office of professional regulation is involved in most states How to apply: Varies by state When to apply: Six to eight months prior to starting practice Cost: $200–$800 Time to receive: Six to eight weeks (or longer) Things to consider: Licensure requirements vary from state to state. Many states require some or all of the following: special licensing exam, a jurisprudence test, oral exams or interviews, state representative or state senator support, board scores from Parts I, II, and III of the American Podiatric Medical Licensing Examination, birth certificate, Social Security card, podiatry school diploma, residency diploma, and list of residences for the last five years. Note: If your state requires a “state controlled-substance license,” apply for this license at the same time. n Medicare, Medicaid, and Private Insurance Applications The application process varies. Applying early should help to reduce your tension. Submitting complete applications is a must. Incomplete applications will not be processed, leading to delays and frustration. Keep track of when you submit applications and when the checks were processed. Document phone calls so you can reference them in the future. Be persistent. Follow up on applications. Be patient.
