CPME Update Fall Meeting The agenda for the October 2011 meeting of the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) included consideration of continuing or new approval status of 84 residencies and seven continuing podiatric medical education sponsors. Recommendations from council committees, which completed their deliberations through meetings and conference calls held in September and early October, constituted the majority of the CPME agenda. The Continuing Education and Residency Review Committees (RRC) held their meetings in September. The Accreditation Committee and the council’s Budget Planning and Executive Committees met in October. Relative to colleges of podiatric medicine, the council considered the March 2011 report of the team that conducted an on-site evaluation of the Arizona School of Podiatric Medicine at Midwestern University and elected to extend accreditation of the school through October 2019. The council also considered progress reports from five colleges. Residency actions at the September RRC and October CPME meeting included (please see pages 12–15 in CPME 330, Procedures for Approval of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residencies, at www.cpme.org, for definitions of the following categories of approval): Approval—44 Probationary Approval—39 Withdraw Approval—1 Progress report considered, no change to approval status, additional information requested—46 Progress report considered, no change to approval status, no additional information requested—15 Other matters discussed at the CPME meeting included continuation of the moratorium on applications for new colleges of podiatric medicine and increased enrollment at accredited colleges; revisions to documents related to college accreditation, appeal procedures, and the council’s bylaws; and two formal complaints against CPME-approved residency programs. All document changes can be found at www.cpme.org. Anna Czubatyj, PhD, was elected to her first term as the postsecondary educator member on the council. She is the dean of health sciences at Baker College in Clinton Township, MI. Dr. Czubatyj has served as a member of several on-site evaluations at colleges of podiatric medicine and as a member for six years on the Joint Committee for the Recognition of Specialty Boards. Kieran Mahan, DPM, was elected to his first term as an at-large member on the council. He serves as chair of the Department of Podiatric Surgery and as tenured professor at Temple University. Dr. Mahan also served as vice president for academic affairs and dean of the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine for 12 years. The council and its staff wish to express their appreciation to Robert Yoho, DPM, and Carl Stem, PhD, who completed the maximum number of terms of service to the council. Spring 2012 CPME Residency Visits (as of November 18, 2011)—Invitation for Comments about Approved Programs The council’s residency approval process includes consideration of third-party comments. The list below identifies all site visits scheduled for the spring of 2012. Third-party comments must address substantive matters relating to the quality of the program and CPME standards and requirements and should be addressed to: CPME Director, 9312 Old Georgetown Road, Bethesda, MD 20814. Comments must be received 30 days prior to the program’s scheduled site-visit date. (An updated list that includes the date of each visit is maintained on the council’s website. All third-party comments must be signed.) Comments will be forwarded to the evaluation team and to the program director for response, if appropriate, during the evaluation visit process. Anna Czubatyj, PhD, and Kieran Mahan, DPM, were elected to serve three-year terms on the council. Timothy Ford, DPM, is a private practitioner from Louisville, KY, who serves as director of podiatric medical education at Jewish Hospital and St. Mary’s Healthcare in Louisville. Dr. Ford has served for the past four years as RRC chair. Oleg Petrov, DPM, is a private practitioner from Chicago.
