King, DPM Ringing in a New Century “The job of the leader is to make new leaders.” Happy New Year! What a wonderful feeling it is to have a fresh start and to look forward to all the promise and possibility of the year to come. As we embark on 2012, we’re not only anticipating the future—we’re celebrating our past. This year marks the 100th anniversary of APMA. What began as a small group of chiropodists is now a thriving national association representing the vast majority of podiatrists in the United States. As we observe this milestone for our association and our profession, it’s exciting to see just how far we’ve come. Our first 100 years have been marked by massive advances in the science of medicine; hard-won victories in the advocacy arena; and phenomenal progress in podiatrists’ education, training, and experience. A new year and a new century give us the opportunity to reflect on our shared past and reinvigorate our pursuit of a bright future for podiatric medicine. In order to secure that future, we must invest diligently in future generations of podiatrists. As I told the House of Delegates during my inaugural address, “The job of a leader is to make new leaders.” APMA and other members of the podiatric medical profession are doing this in a variety of ways, some of which you’ll read about in this issue. Read our Affiliates Corner, page 54, to learn more about Edwin W. Wolf, DPM, MS, the new residency facilitator at the American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine (AACPM). APMA’s House of Delegates in its wisdom voted to support residency genesis by providing significant funding for this position at AACPM. The mutual goal of our organizations is to offer a CPME-approved residency position for every qualified podiatric medical graduate. Podiatric medical education continues to evolve to our benefit as we pursue the objectives of Vision 2015. In this month’s installment of In Short, page 50, you will read about the National Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners’ efforts to establish similitude between podiatric licensing exams and allopathic and osteopathic licensing exams. The newest members of our profession must meet a new set of standards, and they have different needs as a result of their position in our evolving specialty. APMA is placing a fresh focus on young physicians as part of our strategic plan. This focus will include new resources, new communications, and new initiatives. Watch for more to come in future issues of APMA News. As we step into our second century, we have many hopes and aspirations for the future of APMA and the profession. There are challenges ahead, but if we learn from our rich past, invest in our future leaders, and make the most of our many APMA resources, we can’t help but be successful.
