I see the types of patients I am most interested in. 1. 7. What would your last meal be? Steak and potatoes. I am a steak and potatoes girl. Maybe a broiled lobster to go with it and a really good salad as long as it had croutons on it. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? Too many things to be able to answer that question! I do remember wanting to be all the usual “girl” things—a teacher, a model, a stewardess … but when I think about my life now, most of my interests are fulfilled—continuing with education, artistic endeavors (surgery included), teaching (residents and students), and working with people to solve problems. 8. What is your favorite vacation spot and why? Instead of a simple answer, I am going to tell you my five favorite places to be—not in any specific order. I tell people this all the time: Italy—because of the food, the culture, the art, the attitude, the countryside, and the food. The fountains at the Bellagio in Las Vegas—because of their beauty and the feelings of inspiration I experience when watching them. The Merchandise Mart in Chicago—because in another life I am an artist/designer. I always forget the fourth one! The APMA House of Delegates (HOD) meeting. Seriously. Since my first HOD in 2000, I am amazed and inspired at how much APMA does for the profession and each and every podiatrist. • • 2. What do you do for fun during your time off? Cook, garden, golf, travel with my family, and hang with my kids. Even though it’s not officially during “time off,” one of my favorite things to do is to operate with my husband [Lawrence Kosova, DPM]. For some people, the perfect date is Saturday night at a movie. For us, it’s Wednesday afternoons in the OR. • • • 3. 4. 5. What is your favorite movie? “Casablanca”—I still love the classics! If you could meet any famous person, who would it be and why? Barbra Streisand. I’ve always admired everything about her and all she achieved and overcame. Finish this statement: Tomorrow, I absolutely refuse to ... … do any of my “stuff.” “Stuff” includes (but is not limited to) the following categories: housework, office paperwork, kids’ school stuff, scheduling kids’ stuff, bills (personal or office), employee tax stuff, returning calls, and state association /APMA stuff. 9. Tell us about a patient who changed your life/your approach to medicine/your outlook. Well, I would have to say my approach to medicine was not changed by a patient but by my grandmother and more recently my mother. I have learned what goes on in the patient’s mind from them. Things we as doctors often dismiss are much more important to patients than I realized: the inconvenience of frequent blood draws, the discomfort of tests such as MRIs, the inconvenience of how we need to treat conditions, the inability of most patients to comprehend everything the doctor tells them, etc. It is much different on the other side of the exam chair! 6. Why is podiatry the best career for you? Podiatry allows me to not only choose the amount of time I want to spend in the profession (thereby freeing 10.
