Considering that the first podiatric postgraduate training program did not come into existence until 1956, the rapid evolution of postgraduate education is one of the profession’s most notable marks of progress. ffective July 1, 2013, all podiatric residents (even those who started training prior to that date) will be required to complete three years of residency training to meet minimum board certification requirements. The threeyear Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency (PMSR), which receives full CMS graduate medical education funding, places 1956 Civic Hospital in Detroit becomes the first podiatric specialty hospital and offers a six-month internship 1957 St. Luke’s and Children’s Medical Center in Philadelphia offers the first 12month internship in conjunction with Temple University School of Chiropody 1960 California Podiatry Hospital is established in San Francisco and offers postgraduate surgical training 1965 Council on Podiatry Education (now CPME) establishes requirements for postgraduate programs St. Luke’s and Children’s Medical Center program becomes the first postgraduate program approved by the council 1970 The first third-year program is established at Doctors Hospital in Tucker, GA 1983 APMA House of Delegates adopts four residency training categories (rotating podiatric, podiatric orthopedic, podiatric surgical—12 months, and podiatric surgical—24 months) and council approval requirements for each category 1984 Council organizes residency review committees for podiatric orthopedics and podiatric surgery 1989 Council consolidates residency review committees into the Joint Residency Review Committee, including representatives of the American Board of Podiatric Surgery (ABPS), the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics,* and the Council of Teaching Hospitals of the American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine 1991 Balance reached between the number of podiatric medical college graduates and the number of available entry-level residency positions 1993 Council adopts requirements for primary podiatric medical residency 1996 Specialty board certification requires completion of an approved residency training program 2003 Council adopts requirements for 24-month and 36-month podiatric medicine and surgery residencies 2007 ABPOPPM, ABPS, and CPME form the Collaborative Residency Evaluator Committee to further standardize the on-site evaluation process 2011 Council adopts requirements for the three-year PMSR, which is approved for full graduate medical education funding by CMS 2013 All residents required to complete the three-year PMSR to meet board certification requirements * Now the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine, or ABPOPPM 32 APMA News April 2012
