Profiles in Progress: Medical Staff Leadership In this Profile in Progress, APMA News speaks to two podiatrists who have taken leading roles on their institutions’ medical staffs. These doctors dramatically demonstrate the progress in podiatric medicine and the respect in which podiatrists are held by their colleagues in health care. Bob Sage, DPM Bob Sage, DPM, began his two-year appointment as chief of the surgery department in March at Beloit Health System’s Beloit Memorial Hospital in Beloit, WI. The 39-person department includes specialists from general surgery, orthopedics, obstetrics and gynecology, urology, podiatry, ENT, dentistry, ophthalmology, and anesthesiology. “I’m the first podiatrist to hold this position,” Bob Sage, DPM said Dr. Sage. As chief of the surgery department, Dr. Sage is responsible for evaluating credentials of the members of the surgery department, settling disputes among the surgeons, reviewing charts for any cases that have a less-than-satisfactory result, conducting department meetings, and addressing concerns raised at department meetings. This appointment also places him as a member of the Medical Executive Committee at the hospital. Dr. Sage has been on staff at Beloit Memorial Hospital for 12 years. He was chair-elect for the department of surgery for the previous two years and has been a member of the Medical Executive Committee for five years. Dr. Sage has served on the Board of Directors at the Wisconsin Society of Podiatric Medicine (WSPM) since 2000. He was WSPM membership director from 2000 to 2008 and served as WSPM president from 2008 to 2009. He has been a delegate to the APMA HOD from 2001 to 2003 and again from 2005 to 2009 and in 2011. He has served on APMA’s Membership Committee since 2010. Dr. Sage attended the University of Wisconsin–LaCrosse, where he majored in therapeutic recreation. He graduated from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine. n 44 APMA News May 2012 Kevin Lutz, DPM Kevin Lutz, DPM, recently was named vice president, Surgery and Anesthesia at Grant Medical Center in Columbus, OH. Dr. Lutz will oversee the day-to-day operations of Surgical Services and the Anesthesia Department to ensure the highest standard of quality care. His responsibilities include business planning and development, performance analysis Kevin Lutz, DPM and monitoring, financial oversight, and allocation and supervision of resources. The medical center performs more than 20,000 surgeries a year in 31 operating rooms. “This is an exciting opportunity for me to help lead an outstanding surgical hospital at a pivotal point in time when we are evaluating our perioperative process and improving our efficiencies to mimic the efficiencies in our ambulatory surgery facility,” Dr. Lutz said. On staff at Grant since 2001, Dr. Lutz is a board-certified podiatrist with a strong background in business and surgical operations management, having led many operational projects from conception to completion. He holds numerous leadership positions at Grant, including medical director of information technology, physician lead for the internal quality review program, chair of the perioperative committee, president of the Ohio Podiatric Institute, and associate director of the podiatric residency program. Dr. Lutz holds a bachelor of science degree in business administration and accounting from Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, FL, and received his DPM degree from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine. n
