Christina, DPM e-Prescribing: Hardship Exemption Requests As we have reviewed in previous articles, to avoid the 1.5-percent payment reduction on all Medicare Part B claims in 2013, you must either have successfully submitted at least 25 claims with the G8553 code in 2011 or successfully submit 10 claims with the G8553 code (indicating that at least one prescription produced at the visit was generated and transmitted electronically using a qualified e-prescribing system) between January 1 and June 30, 2012. As was the case in previous years, there are some limited exclusions for hardship exemptions. This article will explain how to submit for a hardship exemption if you qualify. You must request a hardship exemption online by visiting the Quality Reporting Communication Support Page at https:// www.qualitynet.org/portal/server.pt/community/communi cations_support_system/234. Initially, you will see these two options: • Create Hardship Exemption Request • Create NPI Level Report Request You should select “Create Hardship Exemption Request.” As you can see, you will need your legal business name as enrolled in PECOS, your billing taxpayer identification number (or Social Security number if that is what you bill under), and your individual rendering National Provider Identifier (NPI; not a group NPI that you might bill under but your own individual NPI). You then click on one or more of the four exemption choices listed, and finally you type in a narrative that justifies your hardship exemption. Note that the 100 prescriptions refer to your total prescription-writing activity for the six months from January 1 through June 30. You then attest to the accuracy of the information submitted. You must make your hardship exemption submission by June 30, 2012. If you assemble all of the necessary information before you go to the Web page, it should only take a few minutes to complete your request for a hardship exemption. Exemptions are granted on a yearly basis, so it will be necessary to reapply next year, even if you are granted an exemption for this year. n Contact Dr. Christina at jrchristina@apma.org. Next, you will see: Almost everyone will select “Individual Eligible Professional” unless you know that you are participating in the Group Practice Reporting Option. Once you select “Individual Eligible Professional,” you will be taken to the final page to complete your hardship exemption request.
