CPME Update Spring Meeting The Council on Podiatric Medical Education held its spring meeting at APMA headquarters April 25–28. The agenda included consideration of continuing or new approval status of 81 residency programs and eight continuing podiatric medical education sponsors. Recommendations from council committees, which completed their deliberations at meetings and conference calls held from January to April, constitute the majority of each CPME agenda. The Continuing Education Committee and Residency Review Committee (RRC) held their meetings in January and March, respectively. The RRC concluded its business by conference call prior to the council meeting. The council also considered reports of the Collaborative Residency Evaluator Committee and the Joint Committee on the Recognition of Specialty Boards (JCRSB). Both committees met in January. The Accreditation Committee and the council’s Budget and Executive Committees also met in April in Bethesda. Relative to colleges of podiatric medicine, the council considered progress reports from three colleges, requests for substantive modifications related to the missions of two colleges, and the annual report submitted by each college. Residency actions at the March RRC and April CPME meetings included (see pages 12–15 in the July 2007 version of CPME 330, Procedures for Approval of Residencies in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery, and pages 12–16 in the July 2011 version of CPME 330, Procedures for Approval of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residencies, at www.cpme.org for definitions of the following categories of approval): Sustain Action to Withdraw Approval—0 Withdraw Approval—0 Probationary Approval—12 Approval—64 Provisional Approval—4 Progress report considered, no change to approval status, additional information requested—32 Progress report considered, no change to approval status, no additional information requested—22 lated to evaluation and approval of the new Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency programs. Other decisions reached as part of the CPME meeting agenda included revisions to documents related to college accreditation and the council’s bylaws. The CPME Self-study and all document changes can be found at www.cpme.org. The council elected its officers, to be effective at the close of the council’s October meeting: Timothy Ford, DPM, of Louisville, KY, was re-elected chair, and Oleg Petrov, DPM, of Chicago, was re-elected vice chair. Proposed Revisions to Specialty Board Recognition Documents CPME publication 900, Bylaws and Operating Rules and Procedures of the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, requires that the JCRSB conduct periodic reviews and revisions of its standards, criteria, and procedures on a scheduled basis (every six years). Because the most recent comprehensive review process for CPME 220 and 230 resulted in documents that were adopted in 2005, the committee was responsible for conducting a comprehensive review at its January 2012 meeting. The JCRSB completed a comprehensive review of CPME 220, Criteria and Guidelines for Recognition of a Specialty Board for Podiatric Medical Practice, and review of a majority of CPME 230, Procedures for Recognition of a Specialty Board for Podiatric Medical Practice, in January 2012. The committee conducted a conference call in March to complete review and revision of the documents. In keeping with the council’s obligation to inform its community of interest of proposed changes in its evaluation and recognition policies, revised versions of CPME 220 and 230 are available on the council’s website. The revisions to each document were recommended by JCRSB and approved by the council. Note: The Policies for Podiatric Medical Certification include policies of the APMA House of Delegates; these policies are not subject to this call for comments. All comments about proposed changes to CPME 220 and 230 must be received in the council office by September 5. Comments may be e-mailed to Alan Tinkleman, CPME director, at artinkleman@apma.org, or faxed to 301-571-4903. Alternatively, mail comments to Alan Tinkleman, CPME, 9312 Old Georgetown Road, Bethesda, MD 20814. The council values constituent input and will consider all written comments in which name, affiliation, and contact information are identified. n • • • • • • • Highlights of CPME’s four-day meeting schedule included a decision to continue the moratorium on applications for new colleges of podiatric medicine and increases in enrollment at accredited colleges of podiatric medicine, adoption of the council’s 2011 self-study, consideration of the development of an online accreditation management system to facilitate residency and continuing education approval processes for programs and the council, and numerous policy clarifications re38 APMA News June 2012 http://www.cpme.org http://www.cpme.org
