Affiliates Corner AACPM’s 2012 CASPR Match Results The American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine (AACPM) and the Council of Teaching Hospitals (COTH) have announced the results of the 2012 CASPR match. Match results were available to applicants and residency programs on April 5, 2012, at 11 a.m. Eastern Time. This year, 530 qualified applicants (487 from the Class of 2012 and 43 from previous classes) contended for 503 entrylevel residency positions. Four hundred forty positions were filled through the match, representing a match rate of 83 percent for applicants and 87 percent for programs. The 90 remaining qualified applicants (71 from the Class of 2012 and 19 from previous classes) had the opportunity to participate in the scramble to obtain the remaining 63 unfilled positions. Information on applying for these positions was posted to www.casprcrip.org at the same time match results were released. For the first time in 2012, AACPM required applicants to pass the American Podiatric Medical Licensing Examination (APMLE) Part I and Part II to participate in the match. This change was made in response to a new requirement in CPME 320, Standards and Requirements for Approval of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residencies, indicating that all residents have to pass Part I and Part II prior to starting a residency program. The match date was pushed back to April to allow applicants two chances to pass Part II prior to the match. On behalf of the AACPM Board of Directors, Chair Michael J. Trepal, DPM, said, “We are grateful to the AACPM Graduate Services staff for their herculean efforts to complete this year’s CASPR match within a week of receiving March APMLE test scores. We also thank [the National Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners] for releasing scores earlier than anticipated so that we were able to move forward.” n year resident at [the University of Texas] when I visited the program as an extern in my fourth year of medical school. Even then he emphasized the importance of helping others to succeed. If hospital rounds were scheduled for 6 a.m., Joe would be there at 5, teaching us how to present, the significance of lab reports, and the like.” Dr. Satterfield added, “Joe is still a 5 a.m. kind of podiatric physician, not minding the clock in order to help others. The difference now is that it isn’t for a bunch of green-behind-the-ears medJoseph M. Caporusso, DPM, and ical students, but for our enKathleen Satterfield, DPM. tire profession.” n ASPD Welcomes New Executive Director, Updates Website The American Society of Podiatric Dermatology (ASPD) recently hired an executive director to better meet the needs of its members and provide larger, more appealing continuing education programs for the podiatric community. ACFAOM maintained this tradition on March 16 when the board elected Joseph M. Caporusso, DPM, an honorary member effective with his inauguration as the 86th APMA president on March 18 at the 2012 APMA House of Delegates meeting in Washington, DC. Kathleen Satterfield, DPM, ACFAOM president and Dr. Caporusso’s former colleague at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, presented the honorary membership diploma to Dr. Caporusso. She noted the importance of the role of the APMA president and assured Dr. Caporusso of ACFAOM’s support during his presidency. “Dr. Caporusso was one of the first podiatric physicians who taught me my clinical skills,” she said. “He was a second62 APMA News June 2012 Texas Hosts Resident Case Competition The Texas Podiatric Medical Foundation hosted the Bandera Ranch Meeting April 13–15 in Bandera, TX.
