Report from the APMAPAC Chair By Gerald D. Peterson, DPM Just Do It By the time you read this column, a new PAC Chair, Barney Greenberg, DPM, of Florida; a new Vice Chair, William Dabdoub, DPM, of Louisiana; and a new Secretary/Treasurer, Randy Kaplan, DPM, of Michigan, will have assumed the leadership of APMAPAC. In a recent conversation, Dr. Greenberg said he believed member contributions to APMAPAC should be mandatory. I agreed that every member should make a commitment to support the PAC. I told him it was obvious he had ingrained this “mandatory mindset” in Florida, just like I had in Oregon, because a substantial percentage of both states’ members recognize the importance of political action and embrace it. That is why our states have been politically successful—they understand the importance of participating at a high level. Based on Dr. Greenberg’s successful leadership in Florida, I expect to see an invigorated and energized effort to increase APMA members’ participation in APMAPAC—especially among the 70 percent of non-givers in this profession. The idea of a mandatory mindset will serve our political endeavors well if we can convince members who do not participate to understand the importance and necessity of participation. Members can no longer afford to look the other way and expect someone else to carry their load. Every member must contribute. Embrace the mandatory mindset and become a regular contributor to APMAPAC. We can accomplish so much more if all members participate. If you are one of our regular contributors, get one of your fellow members to contribute. Peer-to-peer encouragement is the most successful, convincing means of increasing our level of participation. Your personal investment in our political success can make a positive impression on your fellow members who don’t contribute and influence them to take on the mandatory mindset, which could then spread to every member. This philosophy, when implemented by all of us, should almost guarantee success. It has already done so in many states where membership is highly participatory.
