Technofile Everything You Love about Google … Plus More It’s not like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, or LinkedIn. It’s newer, more intuitive, and sometimes more confusing. Google+, pronounced Google Plus, is often shortened to G+ in online stories, tweets, and posts on other social networking sites. This relatively new website was launched in 2011. You may have heard that in its earliest iteration, Google+ was invitation only: You had to know somebody with an account before you could join the social networking site. All that has changed. There now are more than 250 million registered accounts, and if you aren’t already among those users, you can create an account at http://plus.google.com. According to Google, after joining Google+, you can enhance your profile in five steps: Introduce yourself, connect with friends and family, follow interesting people, choose people with whom you will share information, and say “hi.” Your own G+ page allows you to participate in Google Hangouts, Events, Circles, and Mobile. Two of the most popular and talked-about features from G+ are Hangouts and Circles. A Hangout allows you to video chat with up to 10 people for free. All that has changed. to see family members thousands of miles away. A Circle, which is a feature unique to Google+, is the way you can categorize your friends, family, coworkers, or even strangers. You can choose which groups get to see your posts, essentially allowing only certain people to view content. Of course, it is important to remember that anything you post online is fair game for anyone to find. Google attempts to integrate the social signals it can extract from Google+ into its search engine rankings. What this means is the more frequently you update your G+ page, the higher you and your G+ content will appear in Google’s search results. If Google+ sounds like an enhanced Facebook, that’s not quite the goal. According to Google executives, G+ is a way of incorporating Google services, such as YouTube and Maps, and making them more relevant by incorporating the user’s personal data. Ideas to increase your presence on Google are fairly simple: Try to update your Google+ page once a week; add the G+ button to your practice website; and begin inviting friends, family, and colleagues to your Google+ page. Google+ is free; the only cost is your time spent posting content. Results may not be instant, but being active with Google+, or any Google product, will likely never be a mistake. APMA began its Google+ page in early June and is steadily growing its presence on the site. Bylaws Propositions Due Submission of Proposed Modifications to the Bylaws and Administrative Procedures APMA Bylaws propositions, including the Code of Ethics, are due to Glenn B. Gastwirth, DPM, APMA executive director, by October 1, 2012. The deadline to submit any proposed modifications to the APMA Administrative Procedures is January 31, 2013. Such amendments should be submitted in the form of a proposition following the same process used to propose a modification to the APMA Bylaws. Submissions can be mailed to the attention of Dr. Gastwirth at the American Podiatric Medical Association, 9312 Old Georgetown Road, Bethesda, MD, 20814. APMA’s Bylaws and Procedures Committee will review the submissions and present them, with comment, to the regular meeting of the House of Delegates, March 17–18, 2013, in Washington, DC.
