Worthy of Note APMA Members Use Intelligent Textiles to Speed Healing Biomedical engineer Bijan Najafi, PhD, a renowned expert on human motion recently recruited to the University of Arizona Department of Surgery, has brought together University of Arizona researchers, clinicians, and biomedical engineers to form the Interdisciplinary Consortium on Advanced Motion Performance (iCAMP). iCAMP teams from podiatric and vascular surgery, orthopedics, nursing, geriatrics, anthropology, and engineering employ high-tech body-worn sensors embedded in patients’ socks and shirts, as well as straps, patches, and other devices, to study physical activity patterns and gait and balance parameters, in addition to three-dimensional joint structures. David G. Armstrong, DPM, MD, PhD, iCAMP scientific director and professor of surgery and director of the Southern Arizona Limb Salvage Alliance, explained that much like heart monitors, body motion sensors can monitor irregularities in the way people move. Subtle changes in activity in pre- and post-operative patients, he said, can signal potential problems. “Using the technology of intelligent textiles in clothing, we can reduce pre- and post-surgical complications and speed recovery,” Dr. Armstrong said. More information about this endeavor is available at http:// diabeticfootonline.blogspot.com/2012/08/we-are-develop ing-center-of-excellence.html. Introducing APMA/TDI Public Health Fellow, Dr. Tower APMA congratulates graduating podiatry resident Dyane Tower, DPM, on being selected to participate in the 2012–2013 APMA/TDI Public Health Fellowship, a postdoctoral program at The Dartmouth Institute of Dartmouth College. The fellowship curriculum is a unique opportunity designed to provide fundamental skills, knowledge base, and philosophical foundation in health policy and clinical practice, with specific attention paid to public health, clinical/health services research, and health-care leadership. “As an MPH student at TDI, I am here to learn concepts and skills that will help me [influence] health care,” Dr. Tower said. “This opportunity that APMA has provided—to be engaged with students and faculty at one of the nation’s premier FAPA FRATERNAL INC. Our 18th Annual Seminar in the Sun 2013 February 16–23, 2013 Iberostar Rose Hall Beach Resort Montego Bay, Jamaica, West Indies Robert Frykberg, DPM Steve McClain, MD Paul Kesselman, DPM “The Diabetic Foot—ABC to DME” Five star, superior, all-inclusive resort Lectures given four mornings, 8:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. 16 CPME credits applied for in all states. Dyane Tower, DPM public health programs—will allow me to work specifically on public health policy and clinical research as it relates to podiatry.” The fellowship will provide Dr. Tower, under supervision of mentor James J. DiResta, DPM, MPH, with the opportunity to pursue her internship and research project within the TDI curriculum in podiatric public health. Upon completion of the 12-month program, Dr. Tower will receive an MPH degree from Dartmouth Medical School. TDI’s MPH program is a unique program that exposes students to the evidence behind current public health research and practices and trains students to use that evidence to conduct research, implement public health programs, and evaluate such programs. Look for more information about Dr. Tower’s fellowship experience in a future issue of APMA News. n 60 APMA News October 2012 http://diabeticfootonline.blogspot.com/2012/08/we-are-developing-center-of-excellence.html http://diabeticfootonline.blogspot.com/2012/08/we-are-developing-center-of-excellence.html http://diabeticfootonline.blogspot.com/2012/08/we-are-developing-center-of-excellence.html http://www.fapafraternal.org http://www.fapafraternal.org
