D APMA by the Decade: 2002–2012 This 10-decade series plotting the history of APMA at its 100th Anniversary culminates with this issue of APMA News, just as our year of celebration closes this month. The organization has marked the momentous occasion in many ways throughout the year and received recognition for its contributions from the White House, the Senate, and the House of Representatives. APMA staff also buried a time capsule at headquarters with mementos of the organization and podiatric medicine at its centenary. The time capsule is to stay buried for the next 100 years and has been registered with the International Time Capsule Society at Oglethorpe University. Thank you for following along as we have documented APMA’s course from the first gathering of the National Association of Chiropodists to the thriving member organization APMA has become today. Just as it did 100 years ago, the association derives its strength from its membership. Happy 100th Anniversary! n uring the last decade, APMA has continued to make stunning advancements and keep pace with rapidly evolving technology. While in 2002 we celebrated 10 years of partnership with USA Today on the national foot health hotline, in 2012 we are touting our 30,000 Twitter followers; 3,000 Facebook friends; and 188,000 YouTube views. These statistics provide just a snapshot of how the last decade has been dedicated to finding new and innovative ways to interact with our membership and the general public. Early in the decade, APMA governance underwent a change with the adoption of a new set of bylaws. Additionally, the general constitution was eliminated and replaced with a set of administrative procedures. Finally, a fully revised Code of Ethics for the profession was adopted by the House of Delegates. These actions set the stage for APMA’s next great undertaking: Vision 2015. In 2005, the House of Delegates charged the organization to “commit itself to achieving the goal by 2015 of podiatrists being defined as physicians who treat patients in the physician’s specialty without restrictions.” A committee was created to spearhead the effort and immediately identified five major objectives to serve as the pathway for obtaining Vision 2015: Evaluate and ensure that podiatric medical education is comparable to that of allopathic and osteopathic physicians Demonstrate to the entire health-care community that the education, training, and experience of a podiatric physician are comparable to that of allopathic and osteopathic physicians Obtain state and federal government recognition that podiatrists are physicians Market and promote podiatrists as physicians Attract high-quality applicants to colleges of podiatric medicine and thereby to the profession The past five years at APMA have witnessed accomplishments including: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • In the seven years since the plan was created, APMA has made great strides toward achieving Vision 2015. The Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency (PMSR), a three-year residency program designed to put podiatric medicine on level with the education and training of allopathic and osteopathic physicians, will be adopted by every residency training program by July 1, 2013. CPME has achieved full CMS graduate medical education funding for the PMSR. APMA has become an undeniable force within the general medical community and formed lasting relationships with other professional organizations. An emphasis on public outreach has led to tremendous success in educating specific target demographics on the importance of foot health through strategic media partnerships on events such as Diabetes Awareness Month. Although APMA still is fighting for inclusion of podiatric physicians under Medicaid, the organization has substantially increased its presence on Capitol Hill. 54 APMA News November/December 2012 development of the Coding Resource Center, a comprehensive online coding reference for podiatrists and their practices; establishment of the Center for Professional Advocacy to provide direction for state legal, regulatory, and advocacy initiatives that advance podiatric medicine; achievement of graduate medical education funding for the Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency; significant advocacy wins such as the inclusion of podiatrists in Medicare incentive programs and accountable care organizations created under the Affordable Care Act; introduction of a complimentary student membership category; establishment of a partnership with the American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine to assist in funding a residency genesis facilitator; establishment of close, mutually beneficial working relationships with other health-care organizations, including the AMA, American Osteopathic Association, Society for Vascular Surgery, and many others; ongoing, aggressive pursuit of legislation to achieve equity and access for podiatric physicians under Medicaid (Title XIX); launch of the Today’s Podiatrist campaign; and establishment of the Residency Education Resource Center, a new online residency resource to complement residency training.
