Report from the APMAPAC Chair By Barney A. Greenberg, DPM Are You a Member of Team APMAPAC? The elections are finally over, and we are back to regular commercials on TV. We now know that health-care reform will become a reality. APMAPAC contributed nearly $1 million dollars to congressional candidates during the 2012 election cycle. You can see from the list on pages 62–64 that APMAPAC has a proven track record of supporting the winning candidate in nearly all races. We need your support through meaningful donations to continue our great success and to educate and work with these congressional offices to accomplish our goals. History was made for podiatric medicine during the 2012 election, as Brad Wenstrup, DPM, a practicing podiatrist and APMA member, became the first podiatrist elected to the US House of Representatives. Dr. Wenstrup, of Cincinnati, won the OH-2 congressional race in a landslide victory, with a 59–41 percent vote. Ohio’s second congressional district encompasses a portion of southern Ohio, including the suburbs of Cincinnati. Sadly, Lee Rogers, DPM, another practicing podiatrist and APMA member, lost his bid to unseat incumbent Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon in California’s 25th congressional district. We are proud of Dr. Rogers and his outstanding campaign against a long-term incumbent. Now is the time to educate our newly elected and re-elected representatives and senators about the podiatric profession as an integral part of the health-care team. The entire profession needs to become politically active! How do we do it? 1. Make a meaningful donation to APMAPAC or the APMA Government Education Fund. 2. Make contact with your congressional representative and senators in your district. 3. Go to www.apma.org/eadvocacy and write to your state and federal representatives and senators. 4. Persuade a colleague to become a member of the team. If you give to APMAPAC, it is not fair for your colleague not to give! As APMAPAC chair, my goal is a 100 percent politically active membership and at least $1 million in contributions. We need a strong finish this year so we will be in a good position with resources to educate legislators and attain cosponsorships for our legislative agenda of inclusion as physicians in Medicaid (Title XIX). In the movie “Field of Dreams,” the theme was, “If you build it, they will come.” If we can build Team APMAPAC to include our entire profession, we can and will get our legisla- In the movie “Field of Dreams,” the theme was, “If you build it, they will come.” If we can build Team APMAPAC to include our entire profession, we can and will get our legislative goals passed. tive goals passed. We are already well known as one of the top health profession PACs (No. 14 on Modern Healthcare’s list), but we need to be a well-polished, politically active force on Capitol Hill. Now is the time! It is the holiday season, so as one of your gifts, please write out a check to APMAPAC or the APMA Government Education Fund. Put your hand in your pocket and make that meaningful donation to make next year a brighter year for our profession. From my family to yours, I wish you a safe holiday season and a healthy and happy new year. n Contact Dr. Greenberg at pac@apma.org. PURPOSE: The American Podiatric Medical Association Political Action Committee’s purpose is to raise and disburse funds to candidates for federal office who support the legislative priorities and goals of the podiatric medical profession. *IMPORTANT: These are suggested amounts. You may contribute more, less, or not contribute without concern of being favored or disadvantaged. Occupation/employer information is required for aggregate annual contributions of more than $200.00 by the Federal Election Campaign Act. Federal election law does not permit corporate contributions to be used for donation to candidates for federal office. Political contributions are not deductible for income tax purposes.
