CPME Update Proposed Revisions to Continuing Education Sponsor Approval Documents The Council on Podiatric Medical Education approves sponsors of continuing education that demonstrate and maintain compliance with the standards and requirements identified in CPME 720, Standards, Requirements, and Guidelines for Approval of Sponsors of Continuing Education in Podiatric Medicine. Approval is based on programmatic evaluation and periodic review by the council and its Continuing Education Committee. The committee reviews applications for approval of new sponsors, petitions for continuing approval, progress reports, and other information submitted by the sponsors within its review area. The primary purpose of approval is to promote and ensure high-quality education and continuous improvement in educational programs. Approval also ensures the quality of continuing education programs to the public, the podiatric medical profession, and the state boards for examination and licensure. At its October 2011 meeting, the council assigned an ad hoc advisory committee the responsibility to review standards, requirements, and procedures pertaining to sponsors of continuing education. The results of a comprehensive survey of the council’s community of interest conducted in early 2012, and an extensive review of the documents used by other professions, guided the work of the advisory committee. The committee held two meetings in 2012. The council considered the revised documents in October 2012 and circulated drafts of the proposed documents for comment by the community of interest in November 2012. The proposed implementation date for the revised standards, requirements, and procedures is July 2013. CPME invites comments on the proposed revisions to CPME 720, as well as to CPME 730, Procedures for Approval of Sponsors of Continuing Education in Podiatric Medicine. This invitation to provide input is extended to all interested individuals and organizations. The proposed draft documents are available on CPME.org, under the “Continuing Education” tab. All comments must be received in the council office by April 1, 2013. Comments may be e-mailed to Sandy Saylor, CPME associate director, at sbsaylor@apma.org, or faxed to 301-571-4903. Alternatively, comments may be mailed to CPME, 9312 Old Georgetown Road, Bethesda, MD 20814. The council values constituent input and will consider all written comments in which name, affiliation, and contact information are identified. All comments will be shared with the council. If you have any questions about the revision process, contact the CPME office at 301-581-9292. The council will consider all correspondence received from the community of interest at its April 2013 meeting. If the council finalizes and adopts the documents, they will be implemented effective July 1, 2013. Should the council elect to approve substantive additional document revisions based on its review of comments received, the community of interest will be afforded a second comment period, with the documents considered again at the council’s October 2013 meeting. n Did You Know APMA has the following marketing tools? n Footprints Newsletter— a customizable, quarterly member-to-patient newsletter n Clinical Slides— a databank of slides with a broad range of clinical categories n PowerPoint Presentations— ready-to-use, customizable presentations on various topics n Member Logo— APMA’s logo to promote your practice and membership in APMA Browse these marketing tools by visiting APMA.org and clicking on “APMA Working for You.” 50 APMA News January 2013 http://www.CPME.org http://www.APMA.org
