Affiliates Corner AAWP Scholarship Recipients Announced Congratulations to the 2012 recipients of the American Association for Women Podiatrists (AAWP) Founders Scholarships. Numerous talented podiatric medical students submitted applications this year, but the four scholarship winners demonstrated clearly why they are winners. Scholarship recipients are: AAPPM Committed to Future of the Profession The American Academy of Podiatric Practice Management (AAPPM) is proud to announce its commitment to the future of the profession by investing numerous resources in the young physicians and students entering the profession. AAPPM is redesigning its website and will include a new feature: an employment resource area to help those seeking positions and those with positions to fill. AAPPM also plans to follow up on its first successful job fair held in 2012 by hosting two more of these events. The first will be held during the 2013 Midwinter Conference in Pittsburgh and the other during the 2013 Spring Seminar in Pittsburgh. Both events will be cohosted by the Association of Extremity Nerve Surgeons, American Society of Podiatric Surgeons, Texas Podiatric Medical Foundation, and Greater Texas Education Foundation. Help support deserving students studying podiatric medicine by donating to the AAWP Founders Scholarship Fund. n Hua Wins APMSA’s Most Distinguished Award The American Podiatric Medical Students’ Association (APMSA) Presidents’ Committee is honored to announce this year’s recipient of the APMSA Outstanding Student of the Year Award: Natalie Thanh Hua, a member of the Class of 2013 at the California School of Podiatric Medicine (CSPM) at Samuel Merritt University. Hua will receive a $1,000 scholarship, sponsored by the APMSA. Natalie Thanh Hua The committee, consisting of student body presidents and presidents-elect, met at the APMSA House of Delegates meeting in Washington, DC, to vote on the winner of the distinguished award. The nine nominees were extraordinary students, all committed to their schools and community. Upon notification of her award, Hua said, “It is a great honor to have represented CSPM and to be recognized with this award. The award solidifies my belief that our professionalism as aspiring podiatrists is judged both by how much knowledge and skill we gain at school and how much good we are willing to do with it.” Hua founded the Podiatry Clinic at Clinica Tepati at the University of California, Davis. The student-run clinic provides podiatric care for the underserved and uninsured population of Sacramento. She single-handedly oversees the fundraising, volunteers, and supplies of the podiatry clinic, which is about a 90-minute drive from the Oakland campus. APMSA congratulates Hua on her podiatric endeavors and recognizes all the finalists for their individual contributions to their schools and to our profession. n New AENS President Announced At the Annual Symposium in Scottsdale, AZ, in November 2012, Robert Parker, DPM, was inducted as the new president of the Association of Extremity Nerve Surgeons (AENS). The society focuses on advancing treatment and research related to the extremity nerves, especially in relation to chronic pain, nerve damage neuropathy, and nerve-related issues. Dr. Parker is a foot and ankle surRobert Parker, DPM geon in private practice in Houston and is a diplomate of the American Board of Podiatric Surgery and a fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and AENS. He received his DPM degree from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine (now Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine). He served as chief of the podiatric sections at several Houston hospitals and was a cofounder of the Harris County Podiatric Residency Program. He is an active lecturer and author, currently focusing his research and lectures on extremity nerve treatment. Dr. Parker is passionate about advancing extremity nerve treatment and has experienced rewarding patient outcomes, especially in the area of chronic pain. AENS is proud to have him serve as president and looks forward to exciting leadership focusing on developing qualified expert nerve affiliates and teams all over the US.
