T State Advocacy in Focus: Sowing Grassroots Advocacy he January issue of APMA News summarized the results of the 2012 State Component Self-Assessment survey. In preparation for the 2013 APMA State Advocacy Forum, April 26–27 in Detroit, the State Advocacy Committee is taking a more in-depth look at a category we have identified as a point of emphasis for 2013: grassroots advocacy. In essence, grassroots advocacy involves constituents interacting directly with policymakers. It is one of the most effective methods of promoting the benefits and value of podiatric medicine because elected officials are most apt to listen to concerns expressed by their constituents, rather than paid lobbyists. Remember, the best time to advocate for the profession is when you have nothing to ask for. Spending time now meeting with your elected officials will pay off later. There are numerous ways to be part of podiatric medicine’s grassroots movement at the state level. Consider any of the following activities as a way to engage with your elected officials and educate them about the essential care podiatrists provide to their patients: 1. Send a letter. If you are not sure what to say, APMA’s eAdvocacy website (www.apma.org/eadvocacy) provides sample letters to state legislators. 2. Make a phone call. Introduce yourself and voice your opinion on an important issue affecting podiatric medicine and health care. 3. Make a personal connection. Invite your state legislator to your office or clinic and give him or her a tour. 4. Visit your state legislator’s office. Make a trip to the state capitol or go to a local district office if there is one. Meeting with your state legislator annually is a good way to maintain a relationship with him or her. Check with your local state component society to see if there are any issues or messages you should take to your legislator. One of the biggest differences between state and federal legislators is that state legislators are more directly involved in the local community, so they necessarily have more in-depth knowledge of current issues. In many states, legislators serve part-time, have little or no staff, and are also looking to grow their network of supporters and contacts. There is no need to be intimidated; your legislators need you as much as you need them. Remember, the best time to advocate for the profession is when you have nothing to ask for. Spending time now meeting with your elected officials will pay off later. When a critical issue arises, they will already know you and understand the care and services you provide to their constituents. While meeting with your state legislator represents a small investment of time today, the return can be immense tomorrow. If you are interested in learning how you can implement grassroots activism in your state, contact your component leadership. Each component is allowed two representatives at the APMA State Advocacy Forum. Even if you are not selected to attend the forum, tell your state component that you want to be a part of the podiatric grassroots movement and make a difference for the profession and your patients. n Tools You Can Use • Find issue briefs and position statements for policymakers at www.apma.org/forpolicymakers • Download handouts and talking points for the Thomson Reuters and Duke studies at www.apma.org/podiatristvalue • Contact your legislators at www.apma.org/ eadvocacy • Find all state advocacy-related information at www.apma.org/stateadvocacy APMA News February 2013 21 http://www.apma.org/eadvocacy http://www.apma.org/forpolicymakers http://www.apma.org/podiatristvalue http://www.apma.org/eadvocacy http://www.apma.org/eadvocacy http://www.apma.org/stateadvocacy
