CPME Update Volunteer! Become a CPME Residency Program Evaluator One of the most important components of the Council on Podiatric Medical Education’s residency approval process is the team site visit. The purpose of the site visit is to obtain in-depth information concerning all administrative and educational aspects of the program. The site visit evaluation is a peer-review process that helps to enhance the quality of education by assessing a program’s compliance with CPME standards and requirements. The onsite evaluation team confirms information contained in preevaluation documents completed by the sponsoring institution and issues a report of its findings to the program, the council’s Residency Review Committee, and the council. CPME is committed to ensuring that each evaluator possesses appropriate experience and skills essential to the evaluation process. CPME residency evaluators must be certified by one or both of the specialty boards recognized by the Joint Committee on the Recognition of Specialty Boards and must be either program directors or active faculty members of CPME-approved residencies. With the formation in 2006 of the Collaborative Residency Evaluator Committee (CREC), the council, along with the American Board of Podiatric Medicine and the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, oversees the selection, training, and assessment of residency evaluators. Prior to participating as a full member of a team, evaluators complete a CREC training program and are assigned to a team as trainees under the tutelage of the team chair and specialty board representatives. The council pays all expenses incurred during the site visit, as well as a per diem for each travel and on-site visit day. Serving as an evaluator requires time away from office and home; however, participating in on-site visits is an invaluable experience. The training and participation enhance the evaluator’s level of awareness of the residency approval process and afford the opportunity to better understand how other institutions and programs operate. Individuals certified by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine who are interested in becoming residency evaluators should submit a letter of interest and current curriculum vitae to: American Board of Podiatric Medicine Executive Director—Marc A. Benard, DPM 3812 Sepulveda Boulevard, #530 Torrance, CA 90505 mbenard@abpmed.org Individuals certified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery who are interested in becoming residency evaluators should submit a letter of interest and current curriculum vitae to: American Board of Podiatric Surgery Executive Director—Mr. James A. Lamb 445 Fillmore Street San Francisco, CA 94117 jimlamb@abps.org If you are interested in learning more about CPME’s residency evaluator responsibilities, review the Protocol for CPME Residency Evaluation Teams, which can be found at www. cpme.org, and select “Approval Information for Residencies.” Feel free to provide this information to individuals who you believe may be interested and qualified. n Spring 2013 Residency Visits—Invitation for Comments As part of the residency approval process, CPME conducts on-site evaluation of new programs and on-site reevaluation of approved programs. Each fall and spring, CPME meets to determine approval decisions. At its fall meeting, the council reviews programs visited during the previous spring’s on-site evaluation cycle.
