In Short Next Young Physicians’ Institute Slated for April 2013 Young physicians (those who graduated from podiatric medical school within the last 10 years) should plan to attend APMA’s 2013 Young Physicians’ Institute April 12–14 at the headquarters of the Podiatry Insurance Company of America (PICA) in Franklin, TN. Like previous Young Physicians’ Institutes, this year’s meeting will address the unique challenges, concerns, and needs of young physicians. Participants will have a chance to network with their peers and meet with APMA leadership, as well as leaders from PICA, the founding sponsor of the Young Physicians’ Program. Attendees enjoy practical advice on coding and billing, health-care economics, medical ethics, risk management, communications, and more from peers and luminaries in podiatric medicine. The institute is also a fantastic opportunity to become more involved with APMA. Young physicians interested in attending should contact their state components. On Thursday, January 3, Brad Wenstrup, DPM, left, became the first podiatric physician to serve as a member of the US House of Representatives. APMA Executive Director and CEO Glenn Gastwirth, DPM, right, was on hand to congratulate Rep. Wenstrup (R-OH) on his tremendous accomplishments and to express his support going forward to work cooperatively to promote legislation in support of podiatric medicine. While serving in the 113th Congress, Dr. Wenstrup plans to continue to practice through the US Army Reserve at local veterans’ hospitals. APMA Meets with NHSC, Discusses Underserved Patient Care APMA held a productive meeting in December 2012 with the National Health Service Corps (NHSC), part of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). APMA representatives shared background about podiatric medicine and its contributions to the health-care delivery system and learned from NHSC how podiatrists can have a greater role in treating underserved patient populations. Podiatry previously was included in the NHSC student loan repayment and scholarship programs until 2002, when Congress reauthorized the NHSC and made significant changes to the program. Podiatry was eliminated as a named health profession, along with most other non-MD/DO pro46 APMA News February 2013 viders, in an effort by Congress to focus the program mostly on primary care. Consequently, participation of podiatric medicine in NHSC was severely limited. The decision to make any health-care specialty eligible for NHSC now essentially rests with the HHS Secretary through HRSA, but HHS has not expanded the list over the years to any great degree. HRSA advised APMA to reach out to the Advisory Council members and other stakeholders to further educate them on podiatrists’ contributions to helping underserved areas, and to participate in future NHSC public meetings. APMA will continue to build these relationships and keep members informed of its progress. http://www.apma.org
