Garoufalis, DPM, and a new slate of officers and board members who will be elected at our House of Delegates meeting March 15–18. In next month’s issue of APMA News, look for Dr. Garoufalis’s first President’s Message in this space. In this edition, readers have the unique opportunity to get to know the candidates for president-elect, vice president, treasurer, and members of the board—in their own words. (See page 14.) In addition, on page 26 you can read a one-on-one interview with Nichol Salvo, DPM, who recently joined the APMA staff as director of Young Physicians. This new position was created to fulfill the association’s strategic mission to serve students, residents, and young physicians who are at the exciting and sometimes daunting start of their podiatric careers. Now that the 113th Congress is in full swing, physicians both in and out of the legislative fray have health-care advocacy on their minds. In addition to Brad Wenstrup, DPM, the first podiatrist elected to Congress, 24 other medical professionals are serving this session, including 20 physicians. It is likely they will take up some important health issues in the coming year; the Affordable Care Act, gun policy, ICD-10, the SGR fix, and the Independent Payment Advisory Board are all expected to be on the agenda, and the automated cuts from sequestration will also need to be addressed. (See page 24.) For a more in-depth look at the impact of sequestration, the “doc fix,” and the future of the Medicare provider payment formula, see our article on page 28. And as always, our Federal Advocacy Forum (page 48) and APMAPAC Chair Report (page 50) give readers tips and tools for advocating successfully at the national level on the issues that affect them every day. APMA News inaugurates a new column this month: Inside APMA’s Social Media (page 54). APMA has been using social media outlets to share news and knowledge with members and the public on a daily basis for almost four years. Each month, this column will describe some aspect of social media, how APMA uses it, and how you can put it to work for your podiatric practice. In this issue, we review the association’s social media goals and how and why we use particular platforms to promote and educate the public about today’s podiatrists. Finally, we hope to help you escape the winter blues by giving you a taste of sunny Las Vegas and this summer’s APMA Annual Scientific Meeting (The National). From ultra-lounges to one-of-a-kind performances to familyfriendly attractions, the city has something for everyone. We plan to see you there July 21–25.
