10 Questions Featuring Jon Hultman, DPM, Los Angeles In this feature, APMA News asks one member 10 questions and gets all the answers about his or her passions, ambitions, and priorities. Would you like to answer our questions? Contact Aimee Condayan at arcondayan@apma.org. 1. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? 2. What is your favorite movie? I do not generally enjoy seeing a movie more than once. So, I would have to go with “Miracle on 34th Street” because I have probably seen it at least 60 times. 4. It has tremendous variety. Within the three broad categories of medicine, surgery, and biomechanics, there are 300 CPT codes used by DPMs. As it turned out, I also enjoy fighting the political battles to protect and advance the profession. 6. What would your last meal be? A hamburger, vanilla milkshake, and French fries. It would be the first time I would be able to enjoy [them] without a concern about my cholesterol level. 7. What is your favorite vacation spot and why? For a family vacation, Sun River, OR. You can rent a large condominium for less than the typical hotel room, and there is an outdoor activity for every age and every season. 8. When I need to make a major decision, I go to Yosemite with my spouse, and we contemplate the future near a river or waterfall. What do you do for fun during your time off? I rarely take off blocks of time. Instead, I try to work a little fun into my daily schedule. I enjoy movies, good restaurants, and physical activities—especially if the activity is a competitive sport or has a practical purpose beyond exercise. For example, I get around Los Angeles mostly on bicycle (or on foot). This way, I can fit exercise into the busiest days while avoiding the aggravation of traffic congestion and searching for a parking spot. 3. Why is podiatry the best career for you? 9. What is the most indispensable piece of technology you own? My high-tech racquetball racquet. 10. What is the biggest change you’ve seen in podiatric medicine since you started practicing? I graduated during the “dark ages,” so the entire profession has changed dramatically during my career. If I were to pick just one event, it would be the impact the jogging craze made in the early 1970s. Jogging overuse injuries opened the door for podiatric physicians to become widely recognized as the “go-to” doctors for sports injuries, something that changed the public’s perception of the profession. When I was old enough to realize I was not going to be able to fly simply by wearing a cape, I thought of becoming a pilot. When I went through the application process to become a pilot in the military, I was unable to pass the eye exam. My next stop was podiatric medical school. 5.
