In Short APMA Board Takes to Capitol Hill for Medicaid Access Clarification In the February 2013 issue of APMA News, the story “Boots on the Ground: Podiatric Physicians in the Military” struck a chord with many readers, especially those actively serving, because podiatrists are not classified as physicians within the various branches of the military, the Veterans Administration, and the Department of Defense. Some active service members felt that repeatedly referring to podiatrists as physicians throughout the story was potentially misleading. APMA News appreciates the feedback from our readers but will continue to refer to podiatrists as physicians in all forms of communication because we know our members are educated and trained to be the equals of their allopathic and osteopathic colleagues, no matter their place of employment. APMA is working to make the necessary changes to military, VA, and DOD policy so podiatric physicians will receive the recognition and parity they deserve. Look for APMA’s efforts to achieve parity for podiatric physicians working within Federal Services to be explored in depth in the May issue of APMA News. APMA’s Board of Trustees kicked into high gear early on February 14 to participate in federal grassroots advocacy to get US senators’ support for Title XIX Medicaid access-to-podiatrists legislation. The day was extremely busy. The board split up into groups and visited 20 Senate offices, explaining the merits of removing patient access barriers to podiatric physicians, as well as the past bipartisan and health-care stakeholder support for the bill. The board also underscored that we will follow up with senators’ offices in the next few weeks to obtain their cosponsor commitment.
