Worthy of Note Dr. Kraus on Dancing With the Chattanooga Stars APMA Trustee Ira Kraus, DPM, is among eight Chattanooga residents who will participate in Dancing with the Chattanooga Stars for the Partnership for Families, Children, and Adults. This event is the partnership’s sixth annual Dancing with the Chattanooga Stars, a local version of ABC’s popular “Dancing with the Stars” reality TV show. The competition and partnership fundraiser will be held in June at the Tivoli Theatre in Chattanooga. Each amateur dancer has been paired with a professional dancer from the Fred Astaire Dance Studio, where they will rehearse in 15 dance lessons over three months. “I was honored to be asked to participate,” Dr. Kraus said. “The community has supported me, and I try to give back.” n Retired Podiatrist Turned Children’s Author Retired podiatrist and APMA member Richard G. Macdonald, DPM, has written a children’s book, The Whooping Cough Germ That Became a Hero, about the Macdonald family perfecting the whooping cough vaccine. It is a true story based on a medical article written in the Journal of Infectious Diseases in The covers of The Whooping Cough Germ That Became a Hero and Inside the Gates, both authored by Richard G. Macdonald, DPM. 1933 by Dr. Macdonald’s parents, Hugh Macdonald, MD, and Edith J. Macdonald, RN. Dr. Macdonald’s parents and brothers became internationally known and were featured in Reader’s Digest in the early 1940s for proving the then-new 54 APMA News April 2013 pertussis vaccine worked. Dr. Macdonald’s first book, Inside the Gates, is a story about his father, who was the commanding officer of a MASH hospital in World War II, liberating a concentration camp in Austria with almost 17,000 prisoners. n Study of ‘Smart’ Socks to Prevent Amputations in Patients with Diabetes Can something as simple as putting on a pair of socks help save the limbs and lives of people with diabetes? The University of Arizona (UA) Department of Surgery’s Southern Arizona Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA), the Interdisciplinary Consortium on Advanced Motion Performance (iCAMP), and Hamad Medical Corporation (DohaQatar) recently were awarded more than $2 million in research grants from the Qatar National Research Fund to study the use of new technology incorporated in specially made socks. The socks will be worn by people with diabetes who are at risk of forming foot ulcers that can lead to amputation and death. The socks are made from cutting-edge intelligent textiles that use fiber optics and sensors to monitor temperature, pressure, and joint angles in the feet, alerting medical professionals and wearers of the socks of any developing problems. People with diabetes often lose the sensation of pain and are unaware of developing foot ulcers. The new projects are part of ongoing research at UA funded by the Qatar National Research Fund that uses wearable sensor technology to assess the impact physical activity has on wound healing in people with diabetes. Among the recently funded UA research projects are: • A $1.1 million grant from the Qatar National Research Fund, in collaboration with Hamad Medical Corporation, to use SmartSox to evaluate the risk of diabetic foot ulcers as well as assess the outcome of surgery on the foot. It is hoped the socks can help predict when an ulcer is about to form, allowing medical professionals to intervene. UA patients at high risk of developing ulcers will be enrolled in the study, along with patients who are undergoing surgery of the foot or ankle to prevent ulcer formation. An additional $300,000 project funded by Hamad Medical Corporation uses SmartSox technology to measure foot kinematics and kinetics to determine the best orthotic devices, braces, and shoe modifi-
