President’s Message 15 for 2015 As I write to you as APMA president for the first time, I’m only a couple of weeks—about 15 days, actually—removed from my inauguration during the 2013 House of Delegates meeting. During that meeting, I was humbled and gratified to witness the passion my fellow podiatrists have for their profession. The members of your House of Delegates commit endless time and energy to the collective goals of podiatric medicine. By comparison, 15 minutes of action may seem insignificant. But when those 15 minutes are multiplied by more than 12,000 APMA members and 52 weeks in a year, they make us nearly unstoppable. This is my charge to you: Spend just 15 minutes of your time each week for the advancement of your profession. I know our lives are busier than ever, This is my charge to you: Spend just 15 minutes of your time each week for the advancement of your profession. but there are more than 10,000 minutes in a week. If you can find just 15 minutes out of those 10,000 to advocate for your fellow podiatrists, you will help APMA realize the goals of Vision 2015. Fifteen minutes a week for Vision 2015. This challenge is how we will achieve our rightful place among health-care professionals, our rightful place in the eyes of the federal government, and our rightful place with the American public. Use your 15 minutes to contact your legislators using APMA’s eAdvocacy system at www.apma.org/eAdvocacy. Grab a bite in your hospital’s cafeteria with a physician from another specialty and educate him or her about today’s podiatrist and the challenges our profession faces. Reach out to local media outlets with information about foot health and podiatric medicine; share your contact information and offer to serve as a resource to reporters for upcoming health-care coverage. These activities can take as little as 15 minutes—or less— but they make a far-reaching impact for you and your colleagues nationwide. Read more about the 15-minute challenge and my goals for the year ahead in the transcript of my House of Delegates speech on page 14. Also in this issue, learn about our spring foot health campaign on page 10. Find out how to use the materials from this campaign to market your practice and your profession (another great way to make use of your 15 minutes a week). I thank the members of the House of Delegates for a successful meeting (learn more about the outcomes of the 2013 meeting on page 19) and for their tireless commitment to podiatric medicine. I also thank every member of APMA for your commitment. Just by joining APMA, you demonstrated that you are passionate about advancing your profession and practicing at the highest possible level. I ask you to take the next step and join me in spending at least 15 minutes a week working together toward our goals. If every member spends 15 for 2015, we will be successful.
