Record ©istockphoto/James Dillon Toole Gold Medalist Summer Sanders In the February issue of APMA News, we shared the exciting news that up-and-coming comic star Tom Cotter will be this year’s Opening Session speaker. APMA is pleased to also include four-time Olympic medalist Summer Sanders, national spokesperson for the Rethink Varicose Veins campaign, as a speaker at the Opening Session. Sanders will take the stage prior to Cotter’s performance to Summer Sanders share her personal story about how she was affected by venous insufficiency. APMA is a proud coalition member of the Rethink Varicose Veins campaign. Sanders, a member of the 1992 US Olympic swim team, is a lifelong athlete and busy mom. After retiring from swimming, she pursued a career in television. In recent years, she has appeared on NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice” and on the Food Network as a contestant on “Rachel vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-off.” In addition, Sanders is a health and fitness advocate, producing articles and tips for various magazines and a prenatal workout DVD. She is also the author of Champions Are Raised, Not Born: How My Parents Made Me a Success. Team APMA 5K Run/Walk At The National in Las Vegas, you will once again have the opportunity to join your colleagues and friends for the Team APMA 5K Run/Walk! What started as an informal gathering of doctors looking to get a little exercise during The National has grown into a significant fundraiser for the future of podiatry. Plan to start Wednesday, July 24, bright and early at the beautiful Springs Preserve trail with a 3.2-mile jaunt. Take advantage of this opportunity to get away from the bright lights of The Strip and appreciate the tranquil desert landscape. Registration is $20 for podiatric medical students and $25 for all others. If the 6:30 a.m. start time is just a little too early for your taste, you can register as a sleeper. Runners and walkers will receive a free ASICS America Corporation running shirt. Sleepers will receive a complimentary cotton shirt. Shirt sizes will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration is limited to 250 participants. All proceeds from this event benefit the APMA Educational Foundation Student Scholarship Program. Scholarships are awarded annually to eligible third- and fourth-year podiatric medical students from the nine accredited podiatric medical colleges. The event is hosted and coordinated by APMA and the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine. Motown Reception On Tuesday, July 23, prepare for a night of fun and networking in a festive atmosphere at the APMA Motown Reception! From the moment you walk in, you will be transported to Hitsville, USA, and the era of big cars and soulful music. Indulge in the “Temptations” of light, savory fare and the cash bar as you catch up with old friends and meet new ones. Then, dance the night away while DJ Rockstar spins the hottest beats of yesterday and today accompanied by a live percussionist. Be sure to keep an eye out for some “Supreme-ly” surprising guests! Tickets are available for purchase onsite at the APMA registration desk until 3 p.m. on Tuesday. No entry to the event will be made without a ticket, and no tickets will be sold at the door. Children under five may accompany their parent(s) to this event without a ticket. PICA Risk Management Program Make sure your plans for The National include attending the Podiatry Insurance Company of America (PICA) risk management lecture on Tuesday, July 23, from 3:30–5:30 p.m. or you’ll miss a chance to reduce the cost of your medical professional liability insurance! If your medical professional liability insurance is through PICA, attend the PICA risk management lecture and get up to a 15 percent premium discount. This discount may cover the cost of registration! Even if you have already attended a PICA risk management program and received a 10-percent PICA discount this year, you may be able to receive an additional 5-percent discount by attending The National.
