One Family, One College, Two Valedictorians
In 1986, APMA member
Peter Riznyk, DPM, of Orchard Park, NY, graduated
from the Dr. William M. Scholl
College of Podiatric Medicine
at the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science as valedictorian with a
4.0 grade point average. This
June, his daughter Angela Drs. Angela and Peter Riznyk
Riznyk, DPM, did the same.
Dr. Peter Riznyk presented her diploma.
Dentistry was Dr. Angela Riznyk’s initial career interest,
but she found the profession did not offer much variation. Dr.
Peter Riznyk invited his daughter to shadow in his practice,
and she found that podiatric medicine offered a breadth of
clinical experience.
Dr. Angela Riznyk begins her three-year residency at Inova
Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, VA, in July. n
APMA/TDI Fellow Holds
Successful Public Health Week Event
APMA/TDI fellow Dyane
Tower, DPM, MS, held a successful event at The Dartmouth Institute in April to
celebrate National Public
Health Week. More than 40
people from the Dartmouth
community attended to watch
a film and participate in a
thoughtful discussion about
the status of our nation’s
health-care system. n
Senate Majority Leader Harry
Reid (D-NV), left, with Stanley
Idiculla, DPM.
Symposium Features ilegx Section
The 35th Charing Cross Vascular Symposium in April attracted several thousand physicians, surgeons, and researchers to London. The section on Diabetic Foot Care, now
termed ilegx, was featured at the symposium with key members of the team from around the world presenting. “I applaud Prof. Mike Edmonds and his King’s College team for
again putting on such a great symposium,” said David G.
Armstrong, DPM, MD, PhD, director of the University of Arizona’s Southern Arizona Limb Salvage Alliance, who was
among the presenters. “He was able to tie together the entire
spectrum of lower extremity disease seamlessly.” n

Dr. Idiculla, Indian Physicians
Discuss HELLPP Act with Legislators
Stanley Idiculla, DPM, along with the American Association
of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI), met with several members of Congress during AAPI’s Legislative Day in April. He met
with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) to address several issues regarding the sustainable growth rate, residency positions, immigration, malpractice reform, and, of course, podiatry.
“I was able to join AAPI President Narendra R. Kumar, MD,
and meet Dave Camp (R-MI), chairman of the Committee on
Ways and Means, [the committee that] has the biggest impact on

policies,” said Dr. Idiculla. He also
spent one-on-one time with Rep.
Camp and mentioned HR 1761,
the Helping Ensure Life- and
Limb-Saving Access to Podiatric
Physicians (HELLPP) Act. “This is
the time to act firmly and passionately to amend legislation to include podiatrists in the Medicaid
program,” Dr. Idiculla said. n
The Annual Diabetic Foot
Global Conference (DFCon)
in Hollywood, CA, in March
saw nearly 1,000 guests and
delegates, as well as nearly
2,200 others joining live online. The conference focuses
David G. Armstrong, DPM
on reducing diabetes-related
amputations. Cofounded and chaired by vascular surgeon
George Andros, MD, of Valley Presbyterian Medical Center in
Van Nuys, CA, and David G. Armstrong, DPM, MD, PhD, professor of surgery and director of the University of Arizona’s
Southern Arizona Limb Salvage Alliance, the symposium
“gets the response it does because the delegates and speakers
are able to share cutting-edge findings as well as practical
tips,” Dr. Armstrong said.
DFCon13 featured the annual Edward James Olmos Award
for Advocacy in Amputation Prevention, given this year to
Lawrence B. Harkless, DPM, dean of the Western University of
Health Sciences College of Podiatric Medicine and founder in
1987 of the American Diabetes Association’s Foot Care Council. The next symposium is scheduled to take place March
20–22, 2014, in Hollywood, CA. n
