He has to be one of the nicest men on the planet. It seems wherever I’ve been, I’ve had opportunities to succeed and rise in the profession. In this feature, APMA News asks one member 10 questions and gets all the answers about his or her passions, ambitions, and priorities. Would you like to answer our questions? Contact Aimee Condayan at arcondayan@ apma.org. 1. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? A paleontologist. Like all kids, I was fascinated by dinosaurs and loved reading about them. I was always curled up under my covers reading books on dinosaurs way past my bedtime. After reading Jurassic Park, I thought I could play with them or own one in the near future, but, obviously, we’re all still waiting. 2. 4. 8. 9. If you could meet any famous person, who would it be, and why? Finish this statement: Tomorrow, I absolutely refuse to ... Buy a Windows 8 machine because it sucks. Duh. 6. Why is podiatry the best career for you? Opportunity. I’ve made amazing relationships through my career (professional and social), and I’m always amazed how my career has been shaped by giving podiatrists. Although I practiced in “saturated” cities like Chicago and Los Angeles, other podiatrists were will- 82 APMA News June 2013 What is the biggest change you’ve seen in podiatric medicine since you started practicing? Tech-savvy practitioners. Probably the most convincing evidence that podiatric medicine has some of the most tech-savvy practitioners is the age span of tech gurus in our profession. People [think of] tech gurus as under 40, but I’ve met several inspiring podiatrists who truly embody the vision of “Today’s Podiatrist” with techsavvy wizardry and podiatric medical wisdom. Lowell Scott Weil Sr., DPM, is the standard bearer for many things in our profession, but what most people don’t realize is that he has always been the ﬁrst to adopt newer gadgets and technology in his practice and life. Dr. Weil Sr. is just as tech savvy as I am, if not more! Actress Jennifer Lawrence. I have a crush on her. 5. What is the most indispensable piece of technology you own? My iPhone. It is vital to my practice and personal life. I’m not sure why the iPhone is superior for physicians’ daily activities, but there is a clear sentiment that the iPhone changes lives for the better. What is your favorite movie? “The City of God” (2002, from Brazil). It’s based on the history of kids who grew up in the slums of Rio de Janeiro. It’s brilliantly told as a ﬁrst-person narrative, and the ﬂashbacks are perfectly woven into the story. From the depth of characters portrayed by the actors to its visceral visual appeal, I’d recommend it to anyone who loves movies. Where or to whom do you go for advice? Women. Although I do seek out advice from men, I appreciate women’s advice more because they tend to be blunter with me for some reason. Erin Klein, DPM, has been a friend for a long time, and I deﬁnitely go to her for advice on research projects and submissions. Another friend, Marie Keplinger, DPM, has been my go-to person for advice on career opportunities. My girlfriend in New York likes to be brutally honest. And my mother, Lucy Sung, has been very inﬂuential in my life and isn’t worried about the little things. Because she lives in China, I don’t get to hear from her often, but, when I do, I usually get a lecture or two. What do you do for fun during your time off? I used to make wedding videos for fun. When I was still a podiatric medical student, I offered my services to my classmates and friends who were getting married. I was pretty cheap compared to the professionals, and I thought I did a pretty good job. I still love watching other people’s wedding videos and secretly critique them and steal ideas. 3. 7. 10. What is something about you that would surprise your friends? I used to have a “Sesame Street” blanket when I was a kid, and I’ve secretly been scouring eBay for the exact replica. No luck so far.
