Inside APMA’s Social Media Have You “LinkedIn” to APMA Yet? If not, now’s the time! LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional network, with more than 225 million members, including 74 million in the United States alone!i LinkedIn’s purpose is to help you manage your professional identity and engage with your professional network in today’s online world. LinkedIn users create digital résumés and then “connect” with other LinkedIn users—colleagues, friends, classmates, and business partners. This group of connections is considered a network, and growing and engaging with a network creates partnership opportunities with other medical professionals, potential patients, and APMA members. LinkedIn has group profiles in addition to individual profiles, and APMA is one of those many groups. Once users join a group through a personal LinkedIn account, they can interact with each other by starting, joining, or commenting on discussions. The easiest way to connect with an existing network of podiatrists is to join APMA’s group page, which has more than 2,500 members, the majority of them DPMs. Discussions on APMA’s group page range from practitioner advice on specific podiatric procedures to articles and videos explaining the latest changes in HIPAA rules and electronic billing. You, the group members, lead the conversation! APMA’s LinkedIn group includes DPM members and other medical professionals such as MDs and nurses. It is intended to foster discussion among new practitioners and provide a forum dedicated to their unique needs and place in the profession. Join APMA’s main group page, then click on the “More” tab to view the “Subgroups” category. view APMA’s LinkedIn group page, but only members of the group can participate in discussions. APMA staff monitors the posted discussions to ensure they are pertinent to the profession and provide helpful information for the group’s members, but because LinkedIn is a place for field experts to interact, APMA has found that a hands-off approach is best. Of course, keep in mind that discussions and comments on APMA’s group page should be friendly in nature and, most importantly, related to podiatric medicine or other health-care topics. Joining APMA’s LinkedIn group can provide you with access to podiatric insights and opportunities, as well as the ability to meet new people, reconnect with colleagues, and keep up with the latest health-care trends. Need to create your personal LinkedIn profile? Here are five tips from MoneyWatchii to get you started: 1. Say cheese. If you do nothing else to your profile, add a photo. “Your profile is seven times more likely to be viewed if you add a photograph,” notes LinkedIn’s career expert, Nicole Williams. 2. Fill out a little info. You don’t have to fill in every last field, but every bit counts and can be the hook that attracts an important new contact. In other words, less isn’t more when it comes to your LinkedIn profile. 3. Learn to share. LinkedIn is an online community, so give and take as you would in real life. “If you’ve read a good article, share it with your community. You’re illustrating the fact that you’re learning things, and you become known as influential within your community,” said Williams. 4. Join a group. Again, you don’t have to join 20 groups— a few will do. “Join groups related to your industry; members of these groups will have discussions that can help you grow as a professional and provide you with an opportunity to share your expertise,” added Williams. 5. Check in regularly.
