CPME Update Fall 2016 Residency Visits- Invitation for Comments As part of the residency approval process, CPME conducts on-site evaluation of new programs and on-site re-evaluation of approved programs. Each fall and spring, CPME meets to determine approval decisions. At its fall meeting, the council reviews programs visited during the previous spring's on-site evaluation cycle. To review the programs currently scheduled for on-site evaluation this fall, visit www.cpme.org and select "Approval Information for Residencies." The council updates the list as evaluation dates are confirmed. The council's residency approval process includes consideration of third-party comments concerning an institution's qualifications for either provisional or continued approval. Comments must be received 30 days prior to the program's scheduled site visit date. All third-party comments must be signed. Comments are forwarded to the evaluation team, and anonymously to the program director for response, if appropriate, prior to the visit. Andrew Meyr, DPM, representing COTH, and Keith Cook, DPM, and Joseph Green, DPM, representing the council. Council to Hold Fall Meeting The council will hold its fall meeting October 21-22. The council's agenda includes review of a comprehensive on-site evaluation team report of a college of podiatric medicine, progress reports submitted by two colleges, and consideration of continuing approval of approximately 50 residency programs and five continuing education providers. Other CPME agenda items will be the review of comments from the community of interest in response to proposed revisions to the standards and requirements for recognizing specialty boards, a comprehensive review of the CPME 900 series of documents (i.e., bylaws, complaint procedures, and appeal guidelines), and numerous college and residency policy matters. Recommendations emanating from council committees, which completed their deliberations at meetings held in September and October, will constitute a significant portion of the CPME agenda. The Residency Review Committee met September 16-17. The Continuing Education Committee met September 24. The council's Accreditation, Executive, and Budget Committees will meet on October 19-20, just prior to the CPME meeting. n New Evaluator and Program Director Workshops Recap Joining APHA The Collaborative Residency Evaluator Committee (CREC), which is comprised of representatives from the council, the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery (ABFAS), and the American Board of Podiatric Medicine (ABPM), hosted a oneday workshop for new residency evaluators at the APMA 2016 Annual Scientific Meeting (The National). Twenty-two new ABFAS and ABPM residency evaluators participated in training, along with a number of experienced evaluators. New evaluator workshops serve as the first step in the training process, followed by review of an online training course developed by the committee and assignment to an on-site evaluation team as a trainee under the tutelage of an experienced team chair and the specialty board representatives prior to participating as a full member of an on-site evaluation team. CPME also conducted a residency director workshop at The National in collaboration with the Council of Teaching Hospitals (COTH) of the American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine. The workshop highlighted effective didactic activities, research, the role of the program director, and preparing for the on-site visit.
