Zych © 2016, APMA 6 APMA News September/October 2016 President's Message An Update on Our Strategic Priorities In this issue, you'll read about the APMA strategic plan at one year and how the five pillars of that plan (ADVOCATE, EDUCATE, RESEARCH, LEAD, MANAGE) are driving exciting new initiatives. The plan also continues to guide us as we persevere with ongoing priorities, and I'd like to provide you with an update on some long-term issues: ADVOCATE: The VA Provider Equity Act continues to be a priority. Veterans Affairs legislation is awaiting a vote in the Senate. I met with Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), the ranking member of the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs, recently at a fundraising event. I was able to discuss with him APMA's legislative priorities, and he signaled strong support for our legislation. As of this writing, Senator Blumenthal was hopeful that the legislation would come up for a vote before the Senate recess scheduled to begin October 7. A win with the VA legislation would help propel us to victory with the HELLPP Act, which continues to gain cosponsors. EDUCATE: We had one of our most successful meetings with more than 3,000 attendees at our Annual Scientific Meeting in Philadelphia (read more on page 14). I commend Dennis Frisch, DPM, vice president and chair of the Annual Meeting Committee, along with the members of that committee, for a superb meeting. We anticipate another outstanding meeting in Nashville, TN, July 27- 30, 2017. Mark your calendars! Nashville is a terrific place to take your family. Registration opens in January. We continue to provide webinars on a variety of issues, including the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA). These webinars are a tremendous benefit of your membership; I encourage you to check the archive and register for upcoming webinars at www.apma.org/webinars. RESEARCH: As you will read on page 12, clinical data registry development has begun. This registry will prepare us to conduct research that will serve our members for decades to come. The registry will build on the foundation we created through the Thomson-Reuters study demonstrating a podiatrist's value in preventing hospitalizations and amputations. LEAD: The Young Physicians' Institute is coming in October in Franklin, TN, at PICA headquarters. This event contributes to the development of our profession's future leaders. This meeting is an opportunity for young physicians to learn about practice management, career development, and leadership opportunities. APMA is not only providing free registration, but also matching state components' expenses up to $500 to sponsor a young physician's travel and lodging. Watch for a report in the next APMA News. MANAGE: We continue to manage our finances with the utmost transparency and commitment to being responsible stewards of your membership dues dollars. This commitment includes a plan for growing non-dues revenue as well as membership to ensure that we continue to deliver the outstanding benefits of membership you have come to expect from APMA. R.
