APMA Educational Foundation

Message from the Foundation President

We Care About Our Students
The APMA Educational Foundation
provided scholarships in 2016 to every
qualified third- and fourth-year podiatric
medical student. More than $230,000 was
awarded. Every APMA member should be
proud of this achievement. No other organization provides this level of scholarship
support to the students of our profession.
These scholarships are a fantastic way to
show our podiatric medical students that the profession cares
about them. But it is now 2017, and the need is greater than ever.
The APMA Educational Foundation 2017 Annual Giving
Campaign was launched at the recent APMA House of Delegates meeting. For the fourth consecutive year, PICA offered a
$25,000 matching grant to help kick off the campaign. American Podiatric Medical Students' Association (APMSA) President William Hurtt, a third-year student at Temple University
School of Podiatric Medicine, spoke to the HOD about the
need faced by students, many of whom graduate with staggering debt. Hurtt also expressed heartfelt thanks from the many
recent scholarship recipients. The HOD responded with spontaneous donations of more than $70,000, securing the PICA
pledge. Including donations received before the HOD meeting, our 2017 initial effort now stands at more than $100,000.
We have made a great start toward this year's goal of $200,000!
How can you help? How can you show that you care?
This year, the foundation will hold several fundraisers to
meet our goal. At the APMA 2017 Annual Scientific Meeting
(The National) in Nashville, TN, we will have the annual
Team APMA 5K Run/Walk. Please participate. The Podiatry
Management Hall of Fame Luncheon will also take place at The
National. This year's inductees are APMA Director of Legislative
Advocacy and APMAPAC Benjamin J. Wallner and well-known
podiatric physician G. Dock Dockery, DPM. Please buy a ticket
in support of this event or buy a ticket for a student to attend.
A subscription to the APMA Coding Resource Center
(CRC, www.apmacodingrc.org) will provide you the fastest,
easiest, and most accurate ICD-10 coding support, CPT codes,
crosswalks, and general coding guidance. It is an invaluable resource for the practicing podiatrist. Plus, each subscription to
the CRC provides funding for the foundation.
There are many other ways you can support the foundation:
Annual Giving Campaign
A general donation can be made to support the APMA Educational Foundation Student Scholarship Fund or Educational Programs through the annual giving campaign. Each year, the foundation sets a fundraising goal for student scholarships. This year,
the goal is to raise $200,000 in scholarships for eligible third- and
fourth-year students from the nine podiatric medical colleges.

Memorials and Honors Program
Through the Memorials and Honors Program, donations
can be made in recognition of life events such as graduation,
recovery from illness or surgery, death of a friend or loved one,
or significant contributions to the profession. Honorees will
receive a letter to inform them a special gift has been made in
their honor. The foundation also sends letters to family members informing them of a gift in memory of their loved one.
Named Endowment
Setting up a named endowment is a great way to support
the profession and one that offers you the opportunity to place
the fund in your family's name or to honor or memorialize a
loved one.
Named endowments are established with a minimum donation or pledge of $25,000 paid over a maximum of five years.
The interest generated is then available year after year to support the student scholarship fund.
Planned Giving: The Legacy Circle
The Legacy Circle honors those who have included the
foundation in their estate plan. Gifts through wills, bequests, or
charitable remainder trusts are only a few examples of planned
giving opportunities that can support the foundation. The goal
of the Legacy Circle is to encourage and recognize planned gifts
made by members of the podiatric profession to help continue
the growth and stability of podiatric medicine through student
scholarships and increase awareness of foot and ankle health.
These options provide tax benefits and are an excellent way to
give back to the profession.
And, of course, the foundation will be pleased to receive a
donation in any amount that you are able to contribute. Perhaps you could consider $20.17 per month. After fulfilling my
named endowment in 2015, I made a commitment to our students to continue supporting the foundation with a monthly
contribution. Today, I give $20.17 per month to the foundation. It's a great way to give more and not feel the impact. At the
end of the year, you will have donated $242 to support student
scholarships. It's easy to do! Just fill out the 2017 Annual Giving Campaign donor form on page 21, and mark the appropriate box to indicate you agree to be a recurring monthly donor.
The future of our profession depends on the success of our
students. Your donation is an investment in your practice and
an investment in the profession!
If you have any questions, contact Sandra F. Arez, foundation coordinator, at 800-ASK-APMA (800-275-2762) or email
sfarez@apma.org.
Thank you!
Dennis R. Frisch, DPM
2017 President, APMA Educational Foundation
