The 2017 Legislative Conference
In a meeting with Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), David Kiessling,
DPM, talked about how current VA policies harm the efficiency of the system and veterans in general.
"The VA invests a great deal of resources into training podiatric residents, but many leave after their residency," said Dr.
Kiessling. "They come in, get their training and certification, and
then leave for greener pastures. On average, it takes 14 months
to fill an open podiatry position, and these vacancies can lead to
veterans being forced to travel hundreds of miles to receive care."
Mark Block, DPM, met with the staff of Rep. Bill Nelson (RFL) and plainly laid out the problem with VA retention: "We
invest as a country in these individuals, but do not capitalize."
In the same meeting, APMA President-Elect Dennis Frisch,
DPM, highlighted the issues podiatrists face with Medicaid. He
shared that every year he and a delegation of colleagues must
take time away from their patients to travel to Tallahassee, FL,
and fight to be included within the system despite demonstrated
research establishing the value of podiatrists within Medicaid.
Katheryne Glantz, DPM, met with Sen. Dean Heller (RNV) and used herself as an example of the consequences of
the VA policies. "I started my career at the VA and started the
diabetic foot clinic," she said. "I was seeing 48 patients in a
single afternoon. Eventually, I left because I couldn't afford to
stay there."
