Report from the APMAPAC Chair

March Madness
The month of March brings NCAA college basketball madness, which usually coincides with the APMA House of Delegates and the APMA Legislative Conference. Rather than being a time of madness for APMA, March is a time for doing the
business of the association: building the future of the profession through political action.
The legislative conference sees more than 200 podiatrists
and podiatric medical students lobbying for the profession
and visiting congressional offices to promote our profession. It
is a busy time for all the volunteers of our profession who
spend hours marching the halls of Congress and pounding the
pavement for the profession to lobby on behalf of all of us.
This year, our VA Provider Equity Act (HR 1058/S 1871)
was the focus for Senate visits. It is currently included as
part of the Caring for Our Veterans Act of 2017 (S 2193).
When this bill is passed, we will achieve parity in the VA system. Our Helping Ensure Life- and Limb-Saving Access to

Podiatric Physicians (HELLPP) Act (HR 1542/S 1533) was
the primary focus of House visits as we continue to push for
passage of this common-sense bipartisan legislation to reform
Medicaid and Medicare.
How important is political action for our profession? It is
one of the most important things that we can do, and have to
do, to ensure a bright future for our profession.

It is easy to become politically active. Simply follow
these steps:
1. Visit www.apma.org/eAdvocacy and write to your member of Congress about our priority issues.
2. Make your meaningful donation to APMAPAC while
you are on the eAdvocacy website.
3. Call the offices of your representative and senators and
make an appointment to see each of them and explain
to them what the podiatric profession is all about. Be
sure to ask them to call you if they have any questions
when health-care legislation is on their desk.
4. Go to, or host, a fundraiser for your legislator. Donate
individually and support his or her campaign.
5. Get your colleagues involved and suggest that they do
as you do to promote our profession.
It is necessary for every member of APMA to be politically
active. We all need to do our part to support the profession
that supports us. Contribute to APMAPAC today!
