itself," said Dr. Kaplan. He thanked his family and the
house for the award.
Rep. Wenstrup said he was honored and thrilled to
be at the House of Delegates. "It means a lot to be with
fellow podiatrists. Thank you for what you do to steer
this profession, through many rough waters sometimes.
It allows me to be successful," said Dr. Wenstrup. "Wherever you go, whatever you do, remember that you represent the doctors of podiatric medicine."
Humanitarian Award-
Charles Southerland, DPM, received the Humanitarian
Award for his medical missionary work, notably his
position as program director for the Yucatan Crippled
Children's Project. He expressed appreciation to leaders
in the profession who have played a major role in his life
and thanked his wife, children, and "all who have given
me something to strive for."

SCP comes to a close this year. She noted that the goals
of SCP and APMA run parallel. Last year, SCP focused
on diabetic foot care and the cost-effectiveness of a multidisciplinary health-care team. This year, SCP focused
on vascular disease and emphasized podiatrists' role in
treating it.
Matthew G. Garoufalis, DPM, president of the International Federation of Podiatrists (FIP) and past president of APMA, reiterated that advocacy for our profession is paramount and underscored the importance of
educating those who regulate podiatry. "We offer the international experience of how podiatrists function-
[creating] value in public health, [bettering] many lives,"
he said. Dr. Garoufalis lauded APMA as a worldwide
leader. He invited delegates to join FIP in celebrating
International Podiatry Day on October 8, and asked

Special Guests
A number of special guests were on hand during the meeting to address the assembled delegates:
David O. Barbe, MD, MHA, president-elect of AMA,
noted that AMA has "more in common with APMA than
divides us." Dr. Barbe emphasized that the "fraternity of
physicians" can accomplish major achievements, such as
blocking the mega merger between Anthem-Cigna, by
speaking with a common voice.
Debra Delves, chair of the Society of Chiropodists and
Podiatrists (SCP), addressed the house with warm wishes from the United Kingdom as her tenure as chair of

The family of the late Harry Goldsmith, DPM, was on hand for a special
reception celebrating his life. The house passed a resolution renaming the
coding seminar at the Annual Scientiﬁc Meeting in Dr. Goldsmith's memory.

greetings from the UK as she spoke to the house for the ﬁnal time as she
ﬁnishes her term.
