2019 House of Delegates Meeting
Citation for his pioneering leadership in advocating for hospital
privileges for DPMs. He became the first podiatrist to serve as
chief of the medical staff at Newton Medical Center in Newton,
NJ. He is past president of the New Jersey Podiatric Medical
Society, longtime delegate to the APMA HOD, and consultant to
the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners, and he served
as a captain in the US Army Reserve. His advocacy will continue
to play an essential role in the future of the profession.
Humanitarian Award
Thomas Mancini, DPM, received the Humanitarian Award.
He was recognized for his medical missionary work, notably,
for founding Clinics of Hope, a nonprofit organization that to
date has opened seven clinics in West Africa. He also has served
as a medical team leader for the Haiti Charity Hope Foundation
and has volunteered with the Rhode Island Free Clinic. Dr.

to review some of the important
accomplishments of the past year.
Kittra Owens, DPM, of Las Vegas,
waited for her turn to speak representing the Federal Services
Component.
Thomas Mancini, DPM, received
the APMA Humanitarian Award
in recognition of his work treating
patients in rural Africa.
Mancini has visited Togo more than 30 times since 1998 to
treat patients and help establish new clinics. He is planning a
Clinics of Hope Foot Health Center to be opened in the capital of Togo. The foot center will focus primarily on diabetic foot
care, limb salvage, and tropical ulcers.

The delegates heard from the following guest speakers
during the meeting:
Barbara L. McAneny, MD, oncologist/hematologist and
president of the AMA, addressed the house, remarking
that AMA is committed to improving medical science by
improving medical education. The association is currently focusing its efforts on working with state legislators
and insurance companies to remove delays in care for
