nesota Medical Association. Due to the unexpected roadblock of MAPA seeking independent licensure for PAs
in Minnesota, MNPMA was unsuccessful in this initial
attempt. The groundwork and relationships built are nevertheless important and will help with future issues and advocacy efforts.

* New Mexico Podiatric Medical Association (NMPMA)

NMPMA received a state innovation grant to host its 2018
Legislative Breakfast. This event, co-hosted by NMPMA
and the New Mexico Osteopathic Association, was a critical relationship-building opportunity. Key state legislators
shared their perspectives on the current legislative climate
and the upcoming 2019 legislative session. The event included an extended discussion about prior authorization
issues and recoupment legislation initiatives.

* Oregon Podiatric Medical Association (OPMA)

OPMA received a grant to clarify its existing scope of practice to allow podiatrists to treat ulcers above the ankle. To
achieve this goal, OPMA is working both with the Oregon
Medical Association (OMA) and key members of critical
committees from the Oregon State Legislature, including
the House Health Care Committee and other influential
state health-care organizations. Negotiations with the OMA

are ongoing, but the grant contributed to the costs associated with these efforts.

* Wisconsin Podiatric Medical Association (WPMA)

WPMA used its grant to successfully update the state scope
of practice, allowing DPMs to supervise both nurse practitioners (NPs) and PAs. WPMA credits its success to working with the state NP and PA associations throughout the
entire process, as well as to capitalizing on long-existing
personal relationships with critical state legislators. Additionally, WPMA volunteer leadership took time away from
their practices to meet with legislators as well as to testify
at senate and assembly public hearings, and enlisted their
friends and family members to contact their legislators in
support of the bill. All of these actions-maintaining relationships with state medical associations to ensure no opposition and keeping ongoing and healthy relationships
with critical state decision makers-are critical to any state
legislative success.

The CPA encourages state components to apply for the innovation grant. The next application process opens on June 1,

Looking for a way to be more involved with APMA?
Submit your name for consideration to serve on an APMA committee.
APMA President-Elect Seth A. Rubenstein, DPM, is requesting nominations for APMA board committee assignments. Assignments will become effective at the close of the
2020 House of Delegates on March 16.
Requests for assignments should include a list of specific
committees and a list of general areas of interest and expertise.
If you are an incumbent on a committee and are interested in continuing to serve, you do need to indicate your
interest by sending a letter indicating preferences and current
