Meet President Rubenstein
Several years ago, we joined a single specialty group practice
that has since expanded into five states with more than 77 providers. I am fortunate to have partners with unique skills and
talents who have created a practice with an impeccable culture
and progressive vision. This new practice environment has provided greater time and opportunity to focus on my work on the
Board of Trustees.
APMA News:
Tell us about your family.
Dr. Rubenstein:
My wife Caroline and I met 32 years ago. She was living in
Rockville, MD, at the time, and I was living in Reston, VA. It
took some doing, but eventually she consented to move across
the Potomac River and settle with me in Reston. We started a
small practice together, which is still located in Reston.

to live on their own and that Caroline and I have a close relationship with both of our children.
I also have three brothers, one of whom is a retired teacher,
one a corporate lawyer, and one a corporate accountant. I am
the first physician in the immediate family.
APMA News:
You are a talented artist. How do your artistic interests balance
your very scientific career?
Dr. Rubenstein:
I owe my talent as an artist to my mother, who was an exceptional artist and seamstress. I guess you could say drawing
and painting came naturally to me. Through high school and
college, I experimented with various media such as watercolor,
acrylic, drawing, and sculpture.
Once I decided to move toward a career in medicine, I still
tried to keep my hand in fine art by working as a medical illustrator as well as on the yearbook in podiatry school. I am
very pleased with those projects but have not kept up as much
as I would like since graduating. That said, I still enjoy creative
outlets and have focused some of them toward developing my
professional career.
For example, early on in private practice, I produced a cable TV show on modern medical techniques. That was back in
the early 1990s when arthroscopic and laparoscopic surgery
was coming into vogue. We were able to film surgeries and use
video to capture the essence of many of the surgeries that are
considered routine nowadays.

APMA News:
What are your other hobbies?
Dr. Rubenstein:
I used to run quite a bit, and though my mind is still willing,
my body is less so. As such, I try to work out at the gym and
swim. I also enjoy reading and collecting motivational or
thought-provoking quotes.
For that matter, I have always enjoyed collecting and organizing all sorts of things. Even as a child I used to collect and
organize rocks, shells, coins, you name it.
I also enjoy science fiction and movies, such as "Star Wars,"
the entire Marvel Universe, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Caroline and I have two grown children, Shannon and Ben.
They both live in the Midwest-Ben in Chicago and Shannon
and her husband Steve nearby in Kalamazoo, MI. We are very
happy the kids live relatively close together, as it allows them to
visit one another and makes it easier for Caroline and me to
visit both of them in a single trip. We expect to be doing a lot
more visiting, as Shannon is expecting our first grandchild!
Ben works for PSAV, an independent contractor with hotels,
providing audiovisual services. Shannon is a physical therapist,
and her husband Steve is an engineer with Stryker Corporation.
I am pleased, at this stage of the game, that they are both able

What else should APMA members know?
Dr. Rubenstein:
I am a good listener. I want to hear about you. I am interested in what is important to you, and I want to hear how APMA
can help you.
The only thing we know for certain about the future is that
it will be different. Change is coming at us more rapidly than
ever before. Adapting to those changes may be the greatest challenge each of us has in our practice today, and APMA is here
to help.
