President's Message

Blazing Trails
Nearly a year ago at my installation as president of this great association, I
spoke to the House of Delegates about the pioneer spirit and encouraged every member to blaze new trails. I probably did not realize at the time just how
many actual trails I would be blazing as I traveled the country this year!
It has been a true blessing that has allowed me the opportunity to be among
the members and hear their concerns. Virtually every month I have been at major
podiatry meetings, speaking with our membership and our corporate partners.
From the Mid-Atlantic to the Midwest to the Western, I have had the opportunity to share with members nationwide how we are fulfilling the APMA mission:
To advance and advocate for the specialty of podiatric medicine and surgery for
the benefit of its members and the health of the public.
APMA, through its dedicated team of volunteer committees and the Board of
Trustees, is advancing and advocating on your behalf every day. When I have not
been on the road, there have been weekly (sometimes nightly!) committee calls,
from the Legislative Committee to the Membership Committee to the Communications, Development, and Clinical Practice Advisory Committees. The board
also holds regular calls and meets face-to-face four times a year.
We're working for fair compensation and to ensure you can practice to the
level of your education, training, and experience. We held a State Advocacy
Forum in Milwaukee to share ideas for advancing our legislative agenda at the
state level. At the Kaplan-Clarke-Foster Practice Management Seminar, we
raised significant funds to help educate our legislators. At the CAC-PIAC meeting, we shared strategies and information to help ensure you receive appropriate reimbursement. And at the Young Physicians' Institute, we fostered the skills
of a new generation of leaders who will continue to advance and advocate for
our profession.
If our mission is being accomplished by the hard work of our volunteers,
our vision is being realized through the strength of our relationships:
To ensure that podiatric physicians and surgeons are universally recognized as
the essential providers of foot and ankle care.
I have traveled to the AMA House of Delegates meeting, the AOA House
of Delegates meeting, the Society for Vascular Surgery's annual meeting, and the
AMA interim House of Delegates meeting. I have met with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons-American College of Foot and Ankle SurgeonsAmerican Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society-APMA task force, whose work to
build a new, collaborative relationship between our professions truly exemplifies
the pioneer spirit.
As I approach the end of my presidential travels, I look forward to watching
as APMA continues to blaze new trails with incredible new benefits such as the
member health insurance solutions. I also look forward to having the time to
make my own contributions to initiatives like our new Step Into Podiatry student
recruitment campaign. Each year, I enjoy teaching prehealth students right in my
backyard at Utah State University.
I am deeply grateful to each of you for the opportunity to serve and to lead.
I hope you will all continue to foster the pioneer spirit that is so strong in this
great profession.

David G. Edwards, DPM, President
