izations in adults with diabetes. I have some promising preliminary data so far. It's a work in progress.
APMA News:
Why is participation in research so important? How would you
encourage other podiatrists, particularly young physicians, to be involved in academic and clinical research?
Dr. Albright:
Participating in research is important for anyone who wants
to be a leader in the field. There was a quote we used at Dartmouth, originally from Edward Deming: "In God we trust. All
others must bring data." It's not enough to just talk about the
surgeries you do, or the outcomes you get-you have to prove
it. Everyone great in our field in the past has brought data, and
everyone who will be great in our field in the future will do
this, also.
APMA News:
APMA has launched a major student recruitment effort. As a
young physician who is doing great things for the profession and in
health care in general, what is your "pitch" to prospective students?
Dr. Albright:
For the students out there who are considering podiatry,
the thing that pulled me in was the diversity and flexibility of
the field. There really isn't any other profession out there where
you are a surgeon, capable of complex surgeries, [after] seven
to eight years of graduate schooling/training, so you're still
pretty young when you're all finished. You can be a general podiatrist, a reconstructive surgeon, a researcher/academic, or
whatever you want! It's pretty remarkable how flexible the
profession is. At the end of it, if you fi nd that you don't like
surgery-fine, you don't have to do it, and you can still make
a great living. If you find you only like surgery, also fine! That's
a pretty big difference from other medical careers, where if
you complete a medicine residency, you have no chance at
doing much surgery in your career, and you've essentially
missed that opportunity.

What else should our readers know?
Dr. Albright:
I hope new students and residents catch wind of how important research is to our future. It's how we sustain ourselves,
how we can get laws passed, and how our profession can continue to grow. We need more young people who know how to
perform high-quality research, and if I can inspire just one or
two young physicians to take up the interest, that's all worth it
to me.
