CPME Update
Council Elections
The council elected its officers to be effective at the close of
the council's October 2020 meeting: Kieran Mahan, DPM, of
Philadelphia was reelected chair, and Keith Cook, DPM, of
Newark, NJ, was reelected vice chair.
Dr. Mahan is a professor in the department of Podiatric
Surgery at the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia. Dr. Mahan's council positions have in-
cluded team member and team chair for both college and
residency on-site visits, and chair of the council's Accreditation Committee.
Dr. Cook is director of the podiatric residency sponsored
by University Hospital, Newark, NJ. Dr. Cook serves as a residency evaluator and a college evaluator, the chair of the Residency Ad Hoc Committee, and a member of the Residency
Review Committee. n
In Memoriam: Stuart J. Wertheimer, DPM
Stuart J. Wertheimer, DPM, a valued colleague and
friend and former chair of CPME, passed away on
April 11.
Dr. Wertheimer was passionate about foot and ankle surgery and education. During his long and distinguished career, he mentored many new members
of the profession and made significant and lasting
contributions through his participation in several organizations.
Dr. Wertheimer was the director (1978-2014) of the
residency program sponsored by Harrison Community
Hospital (Harrison Township, MI), which later became
St. John Hospital and Medical Center. Many of its graduates have attained prominent roles in the profession.
Dr. Wertheimer contributed to the work of the Council on Podiatric Medical Education for more than 25
years. During that time, he demonstrated a fierce work
ethic, tremendous skill, and stalwart leadership.
In 1994, Dr. Wertheimer became a residency program evaluator for CPME, serving as both team member and chair on more than 100 on-site visits in addition to several college visits. From there, he went on to
serve as both member and chair of CPME's Joint Residency Review Committee (now the Residency Review
Committee) and Joint Committee on the Recognition
of Specialty Boards. Dr. Wertheimer was elected to the
council in 1997 and served as CPME vice chair (2001-
03) and chair (2003-05).
Dr. Wertheimer also served on CPME's 2008 Residency Ad Hoc Committee and as member and/or chair
of the Fellowship Ad Hoc Committee (2005-06), College Ad Hoc Committee (2005-09), and the council's
Executive, Budget, and Nominating Committees
(2000-05).
Dr. Wertheimer graduated from the Pennsylvania
College of Podiatric Medicine in 1976. He completed
two years of podiatric surgical residency training.
Dr. Wertheimer will always be remembered for his
commitment to the advancement of podiatric medical
education and to the organizations he served.
