President's Message

Planning for the Unthinkable
It is a true privilege to serve as your APMA president. Before assuming this office,
each APMA trustee serves 11 years on the board, acquiring real-world experience
in preparation for the many duties and responsibilities of the presidency. This year
will be unlike any other. Never in our profession's history has the world changed
so much in so little time.
Ellen Johnson Sirleaf wrote, "The size of your dreams must always exceed your
current capacity to achieve them. If your dreams do not scare you, they are not big
enough." We now find ourselves in a time and place where it is not our dreams that
scare and challenge us, but reality itself.
That shared reality also demonstrates the true purpose of a professional association, which is to represent and provide for the ever-changing needs of its members
in ways that no single individual can ever achieve for want of time, skills, or personal resources. APMA's strategic plan outlines several critical objectives for the
association, whether in good times or in times of crisis. Among those are to advocate, educate, lead, and manage on behalf of its members.
A professional association advocates for its members with federal and state governments to ensure regulations and policies protect rather than harm your practices. In just the past 30 days, APMA advocated on behalf of its members with the US
Department of Labor, CMS, the Secretary of Homeland Security, and the National
Governors Association. In each case, our aim was to ensure your right to practice
and be treated fairly and equitably.
A professional association educates its members. In the past 30 days, APMA created a robust online resource page dedicated to COVID-19, located at www.apma.
org/covid19. Here you can find resources on financial assistance programs, telemedicine, advocacy, and CMS updates. APMA consistently updates the resources
on the COVID-19 webpage, and has provided webinars on federal financial relief
programs, telemedicine, and coding. We are using a wide variety of communications platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, videos, podcasts, and other modalities, to ensure we can be found where you go for news.
An association provides leadership for its members. In the past 30 days, APMA
created a position statement protecting members who temporarily volunteer outside the scope of practice in their state and collaborated with podiatric boards and
associations to send a position letter to the National Governors Association articulating this need. We also collaborated with the Federation of Podiatric Medical
Boards and the American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine to support
the needs of podiatric medical students and residents.
An association manages, which in this difficult time means being sensitive to the
financial stresses placed on all our membership. In response to your concerns,
APMA waived first quarter FY 2020-21 dues for our members. We hope other associations can provide similar accommodations. Our APMA staff has adapted to
working from home while remaining actively engaged in providing value-focused
services for our membership.
In this fast-changing environment, it is easy to become distracted with new challenges and projects. I want you to know that we will not waver from our plan. We
are here for you. Please reach out and stay connected.

Seth A. Rubenstein, DPM, President
