2020 DIABETES
AWARENESS
MONTH CAMPAIGN
Addresses Patients' COVID-19 Fears

W

hen the APMA Communications Committee met in
September to determine the direction of the November Diabetes Awareness Month campaign, the
need was clear: Members agreed they were seeing
some of the worst feet of their careers. Patients, afraid to seek
health care due to fear of exposure to COVID-19, were avoiding regular preventive foot care and ignoring problems that
quickly snowballed.
The committee focused its efforts on developing an educational campaign that would underscore the importance of
keeping regular diabetic foot care appointments and seeking
immediate medical attention for complications.
The result is " Keep Your Appointment. Keep Your Feet, " a
public education campaign that launched November 2 with
media outreach, paid national advertising, multi-platform social media outreach and advertising, and a member tool kit
with a variety of resources for members to use to reach out to
current and prospective patients.
The campaign is now winding down, but members are
strongly encouraged to continue to use the patient outreach
materials to help mitigate what the Communications Committee considers a public health crisis parallel to the pandemic.
The member tool kit includes sample social media posts for a
variety of platforms, graphics for social media, sample patient
mailings, a tip sheet that can be used for patient portals and
websites, a physician referral letter, a customizable feature article for local media outreach, and a special edition of the patient
Footprints newsletter. The materials will continue to be available at www.apma.org/diabetes. Click the " Download Digital
Tool Kit " button under " For APMA Members, State Components, and Affiliated Organizations " to download materials and
put them to use in your practice today!

S

ince the start of the COVID-19 pandemic,
podiatrists have seen some of the sickest
patients of their careers-but these patients
are not suffering from COVID. Instead, concerned
about exposure to the virus, these patients have
avoided regular appointments for preventive
care or injuries, and as a result, they have severe
diabetic foot wounds, infections, and in some cases
even gangrene. Podiatrists are performing more
amputations and often treating patients at risk of
sepsis, a life-threatening systemic infection.
Patients with diabetes are at high risk from
COVID-19 and should take precautions such as
wearing a mask, limiting opportunities for exposure,
and maintaining social distance. But APMA member
podiatrists strongly encourage all patients, and
especially those with diabetes, to keep up with
their medical appointments.
Medical facilities are following strict protocols to
protect health-care providers and patients, from
requiring masks and social distance in waiting
rooms to implementing disinfection procedures
between patients. If you are concerned, ask your
podiatrist's office about how they will keep you safe
and about the possibility of telehealth appointments.
Regular care to maintain your foot health, as well as
your overall health, is essential, particularly in light
of the pandemic. Don't neglect your regular care
out of fear of COVID-19. Keep your appointment,
and keep your feet!

Here are more steps to
maintain control over your
diabetes during the pandemic:

Stay Active.

Get proper nutrition and exercise.
Consider physical activity a
prescription to be taken daily!

Stay Alert.

Track your daily blood sugar levels and
your A1C. Perform daily foot exams (a
caregiver or family member can help)
to look for any changes to your feet,
including color, temperature, and even
minor injuries such as scratches and
scrapes. Protect your feet with shoes
even around the house to avoid injuries.

Stay in Contact.

Keep up with all appointments with
your diabetes care team and reach
out to your podiatrist immediately if
you notice a wound, injury, or other
changes to your feet.
