President's Message

A Message of Hope
I hope this message finds you well and able to continue your efforts as
frontline providers during these challenging times. Despite the hardship and
strife that have characterized this most difficult year, I remain inspired by the
stories that demonstrate our best nature: neighbors helping neighbors, families finding new ways to connect, communities supporting each other.
Even within our own profession, we have so many examples of this spirit of
unity and mutual support. For many years, innovative APMA members have
worked with industry to develop technology and refine surgical procedures
that benefit our patients. In turn, corporations have supported our profession
with generous educational grants, providing opportunities for our members
to improve their skills and standard of care. 2020 has been no exception. As
we have innovated in the face of challenge and change, our corporate partners
have supported us at every turn. In this issue, we honor them and their efforts
to support our profession and ensure our future growth.
APMA is also steadfast in its support of members. During the past several
months, our Health Policy and Practice Department and volunteer committee
members have worked to address recent policy changes by commercial payers
regarding use of the 59 and 25 modifiers. In addition to meeting with commercial and federal payers concerning these modifiers, we are educating our
members about proper use of these modifiers. Please see our articles on pages
20 and 28, as well as our coding webinars, available on APMA.org, to help
minimize payment delays and rejections.
After establishing our Online Learning Center to accommodate members'
educational needs this summer, APMA used that platform to bring members
together safely for the benefit of the profession once again at the first virtual
Young Physicians' Institute (YPI) this fall. The YPI provides an exciting opportunity for podiatrists in the first 10 years of practice to gain valuable and relevant practice management and leadership tools while networking and sharing their ideas to advance podiatric medicine and surgery. Read the recap of
this year's virtual YPI on page 14.
Finally, APMA and its members are coming together to support our patients
nationwide. November was Diabetes Awareness Month, and APMA produced
Keep Your Appointment, Keep Your Feet, a campaign designed to address a
timely issue: the growing phenomenon of patients avoiding their regular diabetes care during the pandemic and experiencing severe complications as a
result. Please visit www.apma.org/diabetes to access tools to use in your community and to promote your practice. You can read more about the campaign
on page 24 of this issue.
COVID-19 has kept us physically apart. But I hope you will agree that in
other, important ways, the challenges of this year have brought us together as
physicians and as human beings, for the good of our profession and our patients. I have not been able to meet you face to face this year, but I hope to
catch up with you during one of the upcoming virtual regional educational
programs. Until then, I wish you peace and good health this holiday season.
Be well and stay safe!

Seth A. Rubenstein, DPM, President
