he practice of Diversity, Equity, and
Inclusion (DEI) means working to
support a personal and professional
circle that is diverse in different experiences, thoughts, and demographics;
equity surrounding fairness in personal
practices and access to opportunities; and
inclusion in allowing others to share the
whole version of themselves and the qualities that make each individual unique-not
just the qualities that are expected of
them.
During the YPI, Ella Washington, PhD,
an organizational psychologist and faculty
member at the Georgetown University
McDonough School of Business, gave an
in-depth presentation about DEI and
why DEI is important for both individuals
and organizations to embrace. During
the session, attendees were sorted into

breakout rooms to discuss their personal
DEI journey.

13 RULES FOR A SUCCESSFUL EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT
Mark Kopson, JD, is a health-care lawyer and partner at Plunkett Cooney. During the YPI, he spoke at length about
physician contracts based on his more than 30 years of experience. He began his presentation by detailing his " 13 Rules
for a Successful Employment Contract " before explaining common contract terms and concepts. Whether you are getting
ready to sign your first contract or your 10th, consider these tips.
1 Research your proposed employer
and position.
2 If they treat you badly while you are
dating ... don't plan on a happy
marriage.
3 Consult your own legal counsel early
and often.
4 Don't let an OB/GYN perform your brain
surgery. Attorneys specialize too.

8 If you don't understand the
Compensation and Bonus terms,
chances are you won't be happy with
your compensation and bonus.
9 Compensation and Bonus terms that
sound good but are illegal do not a good
deal make.
10 One-sided termination provisions
generally turn out badly ... for you.

5 If it's not in black and white, it doesn't
exist.

11 The true term of a " five-year " withoutcause contract is the number of days
required for your termination.

6 If the contract language is vague, it is
bad for you.

12 Assume the non-compete clause is
enforceable and will be enforced.

7 The devil is in the details.

13 Know when to hold and when to
fold-first consult your attorney, then
trust your gut.
